1976 Honda GL1000

i would like you to take a pic of how that tank comes by the rear wheel??

i have changed tons of them and pull the wheel always

i dont think the swing arm and wheel will drop enough to get the tank by

I can not imagine doing without pulling the rear wheel. Even then it's feel like you're an MD and your bike is giving birth.

Okay, enough fucking around with this thing.

Of course the manual was wrong and everyone else right, you can't get the tank out without removing the rear wheel.

I believe I have commited Randakks cardinal sin. I cleaned the carbs and then let them suck from a dirty tank. The inside looks like this.

and this

I've read several different techniques for cleaning out a tank. Vinegar, citric acid and various other more vicious types of acid. Is any of this stuff worth trying or should I take it to a radiator shop and let them give it a shot?

Troybilt was successful with vinigar, then neutralized with Baking soda and water then immediately coating in 2 stroke oil and filling to the top with stabilized gas. Put filter(s) on anyway before connecting to your carbs again. Good luck.

Good to hear, I was hoping to give that a shot first since it's relatively cheap. I'm gonna be out of town over the weekend but I'll continue the attack on Monday.

Lots of people have mentioned taking things to 'rad shops' for cleaning out, but I've never actually heard from someone first-hand who did it. I've never looked into it myself.

If you fill w/ vinegar, remove any Al fittings as they will vanish. That's not so bad.

You might be surprised how much of that is actually gasoline varnish from years (decades) of letting it dry out and refilling.
Think about how bad float bowls get.

so far i have not had to do any more than a simple vinegar clean if they are worse than that

i just go troll ebay

i bought a tank in perfect condition nice and clean for my gl1100 for 65 dollars shipped

I have a perfectly good gas tank for your bike layin around. (and a few motors). Hell i got tons of wing parts layin around. Mines a 76 as well. So most of it is for that year. let me know if you need something.

And by the way, you can get the tank in/out without removing the wheel lol. Just takes some fidgeting.

I've seen worse. I HAVE worse, and the PO coated (poorly) over it. Luckily, I discovered that acetone would take off the Kreem coating. Now to get the rust out with vinegar. You can make yours good easy enough. At least you have ONE good (albeit reserve) pickup screen. I plan to stick a fuel pickup sock on my exposed pickup tubes.

One day you'll have to show me how cuz I tried but it didn't seem like it was happening without a lot of axle grease, cursing and a big hammer.

How does one go about this? I was wondering what to do about that ruined screen.

Also, I'm in the market for an exhaust system. I knew the headers were pretty bad but when I dropped the muffler to get the rear axle out it broke off where it connected to the header, it's rusted out as bad as the headers.

You go to a friendly auto parts house and see if you can look through the boxes of pickup socks. Come to think of it, try outdoor power equipment dealers, too. There are hundreds of designs. Then, loooong hemostats from Harbor Freight, good lighting, mirrors, and patience! I also have a USB camera that I duct tape to coat hanger wire to help me see in remote places. Best $35 computer toy I've ever bought!

This was trying to get the Kreem off of the primary pickup screen. Inverted tank, acetone in a pill bottle on coat hanger wire, viewing with USB camera on coat hanger wire through my old netbook.

the thing i also learned is to make sure the pipes dont have rust holes in them from corrosion

i cleaned one then put it all together only to find out the reserve draw tube had pinholes in it

and it would suck air instead of the remaining fuel

i ran out of fuel switched to reserve and nothing

Can't fit the bike in the shed right now and it's pouring rain. The bike is covered by a tarp and the tank(and various other parts) are in the shed. I threw some screws into the tank and sloshed it around for a while. Can't really work on anything right now so I'll let it sit another day at least.

John - remember that you can strain the vinegar and use it again. I usually do two or three picklin's

Yep. but it is pretty cheap to begin with so if you can't store it, add baking soda and get rid of it. Baking soda and water in the tank then really rinse good, dry immediately, I think Kiley used a hair dryer on his tank with a mount and let it run for a half hour to get all the moisture out and coat in 2 stroke oil and add gas as soon as you can. If it is humid, wait to take the vinigar out until the humidity drops because it can flash rust right before your eyes.

If you can't store it, you shouldn't have thrown the jugs away ;)
