Hey everyone!I'm new to DTT but im on it religiously :p, Not to good at hellow but here it goes names Clint, From down east (maine) I got really into cafe bikes after my tatto artist was talking to me about a bike he was converting into a cafe rat styled bike, I came acros DTT and got hooked right away on them been reading TONS of project threads and decided i'd start my own when i began my project, so here it goes!

I recently picked up a 1976 xs650 in pretty decent shape for 360 $$ from a CL sale
the bike is in working order the front brake just would stick when i first got it, but thats fixed now.
I plan on doing something with it with alot of black to make it aq tough looking bike.
this is my first time ever doing anything like this so any tips pointers feedback good or bad will help!

and here it it is\

Ripped the back wheel off and got the bike down to the triangle after pulling thebattery box and all the other rusted out junk in there

after i tore it down to the triangle i cut three peices of cardboard to mock up the tray ill be making under the seat for the wiring and battery to go,
anybuddy got some suggestions of what i should make the actually tray out of and how to mount it to the frame?

Sheet metal and bolts. Kidding.

You can use anything really. Some guys use aluminum sheet, others steel. I've also seen perforated sheet, and expanded metal mesh. Just depend on what you want it too look like, and the tool you've got. Welcome aboard, and scrounge around. Don't be afraid to be creative and use whatever is lying around.

Make it from whatever you're making your seatpan out of - you're cutting the material anyway.

Awesome deal on the bike! If you want some ideas (not necessarily good, but ideas) on the seat area and other XS650 issues, you can peruse my 3 year long build here:

Alright so day 2 is down, I got all the wiring figured out and i made a tray to put it all on, basically it all runs up through 1 tray and then all the elctronis are mounted to the rear tray near the battery Im gonna cut and splice all the wires so they run from the elctronics in the rear tray and the connectors all plug in to eachother in the front tray but heres some pics for now!

I found an old trailor tail light kicking around pulled the rubber seal off and made a guide for the wires to go through and I mounted my trays with P Clamps that I picked up from Lowes

Heres a side shot of all the compnents they're not bolted down yet so they are sitting up a little High i made some rubber bushings to screw them into the pan so they dont vibrate and the first set i made seemed to sit great

The back of the rear pan has angle iorn thats all drilled out that i fou nd in the garage attached to it
wich i'll run a strap through for the battery

You might want to check a xs650 manual but I know the xs360 runs a model without electric start and it uses a 7 amp instead of a 12 amp battery ... 12N7 instead of 12N12.

Look up the battery for '70 XS1, they were kick start only. I usd one of them in my starter removed streetracker.

you paid an excellently low price for an xs in that condition, they usually command much more given their steady following. And bikes in good condition are hard to come by since they're a popular choice to cut up (ie chopper/bobber poseurs).

Just please think twice before you approach the frame with a hacksaw!!

Yeah i dont really plan on cutting much off the frames gonna stay how it is it's just gonna loose some extra tabs from the side covers and stuff.

not much new news on the bike, ordered some parts today,

~34mm clip ons
~1 x 3 hole headlight brack set - black
~two tappered Pod filters
~Crank case breather filter
~Tiny Rear Turn Signals (not sure if im gonna use them or not)

been spending a lot of time lately looking for a good set up for rear sets for this bike but not really any luck.

havn't updated in a while been workin on my Jeep...whent to stop at a redlight lastnight and kept going... whent right through the 4 way turns out i blew the front left brake rod, so thats another set back i got to napa this morning and picked up a new rod and got it installed just need a buddy to come over to help bleed the brakes...but shit that was scarry..

on the bright side, i got a few other things at napa for the wiring harness so im gonna tackle that tonight and put it all back together, I painted the wheels, swing arm and tripple tree all last night with rustoleum primer so now there gonna get flat black tonight. Also received my headlight bucket and visor from DCC in the mail and they were great ordered it monday got it thursday.

I agree!!!!!!!!!! I have worked on a couple of these bikes lately, and found them to have quite the following and demand. I was really surprised! Yous looks to be in really nice shape, so before hacking it, or pounding the stock parts consider selling them, or trading them to somebody who needs them. Get yourself rougher parts to modify. As much as we would like to build cafe's, there are people out there restoring these old bikes as well. We need to help keep as many of these old bikes going as much as possible.

yeah, i have all the stock parts sitting in bins in the basement, like sidecovers, airboxes, fenders, seat, bars, tank, etc. if anyones interested in the parts let me know, im looking to get a new tank ;D

Just about everyone here has a toolbox loaded with a hacksaw, hammer, and spraybombs! No one here has even ever thought of restoring a bike. List your parts on CL, or Ebay.

Hey, just caught on to this thread. Nice find and another Mainer, where you located? I'm in Portland.

On your build be sure you measure the clearance with the rear tire and your electrics tray/seat pan. be sure that tire is going to bump it if you bottom out.
