1977 CB750 F2 Super Sport

the more I look at the seat, the more I'm annoyed with it! granted it was my first time at seat upholstery, not having it professionally done definitely takes away from the look. i just won an auction on another seat pan, so I plan on cutting, welding, fastening, glassing, or doing whatever to mock up a new seat. This time, i'll send it to a professional upholster. it's worth the $100+. i wouldn't mind trying upholstery again, but it's a skilled trade for sure!

Nice looking build man...

I feel you on the side covers, I have a 78 SS and I think I'll break down and glass some home rolled. I'm looking at EMGO pods too, but with 135 mains running the V-stacks from the stock box (temp fix) I'm still slightly rich and looking to step down. I was torn between using the stock bump stop/cowl and glassing my own, but I really like the lines you got out of it. How far forward did you move it ?

Keep up the great work, I will be watching with anticipation...

thanks for the compliments! to think 6 weeks ago i just wanted to get it running and semi-stock... and now it looks like this. it's amazing what high-temp rattle can and chrome polish can do ;D I can't wait to big bore it this coming winter...

i'm running 125 mains with the filters and that cycle x 4-2-1 pipe. it has great midrange, but it still gargles a bit when the throttle is snapped open (8000-11000rpm). i may just move up to 130 mains, and the needle up one click. 45 idle jets make it purr nicely. it even starts with no choke :eek:

you should try Maier for the sidecovers. they say they're out of stock, but i would give them a call. they're super durable and really flexy, unlike the brittle stock ones. here's the URL: http://www.maier-mfg.com/index.php

i can't remember how far forward i moved the cowl, but i remember cutting a lot of the pan off. last i remember, the very back of the cowl was 2 inches forward of the end of the struts, which is why i cut them off.

You going to head to Backfire Moto on the 15th?

i'm considering it! it's hard for me to get out on the weeknights because of my boy, but i should be able to ride our for a few hours. a bunch of guys from my club will be there (knucklebusters). we should definitely try to cross paths!

Hopefully I'll be rockin' my new blue tank with fat white stripe...

The Backfire Moto Night gave me a ton of inspiration, so I spent a little free time today in Photoshop mocking up what my bike will be turning into within the next couple months. I’m getting a seat, battery tray and oil tank from Benjie’s Cafe Racers. After much deliberation, I feel that this combo will definitely nail the look I’ve been going for. Who knows - maybe set my bike apart from the rest and move towards a show quality cafe racer. Here’s where I'm going in the next couple months (damn i love photoshop):

* New seat and oil tank from Benjie
* Remounted battery and electronics under seat pan/rear cowl
* New tach and speedo
* Clip-ons
* New headlamp and mounting ears
* Dyna-S electronic ignition & coils with red spark wire
* Yamaha R6 rearsets with welded brackets and custom linkage
* Reservoir shocks
* Shaved tank with kneedents
* Gloss black paint with gray accents

It's been a long and fun journey ;D

I definitely like the concept, and good luck on getting the green together to get it done. Keep the progress coming...

Thanks!

Time and money is everyone's arch nemesis :)

I've already checked off half this shopping list. Now I just need a couple sunny weekends to get it all put together.

It also takes Benjie 3-4 weeks to turn his builds around. Let's just say I'm getting antsy...

I bumped up to 135 mains last weekend and she runs PERFECT. Great low, mid, and high range through all the gears. I may also be on the rich side, so I'll probably bump down to 132 or 130 just to fine tune it. I also don't mind being a tad rich. I didn't end up moving the needles too. Stoked because that's a lot more pain-staking than screwing in some new jets :)

I knew there was a reason I liked this build! Knucklbusters! I have one of your shirts. I get compliments and questions all the time about it.

Awesome! I'm the 'Rook' of the guys, but I already feel like family. Great ideas and a kick ass knowledge of bike mechanics.

Were you at Backfire?

And here's an updated shot for everyone watching this build that enjoys eye-candy. (In Photoshop) I shoretened the fender, drilled the rotors, red comstar accents... AHHHHH man I can't wait to wrench and ride this weekend ;D It's Steven's Pass' last day of snowboarding on Sunday, so I'll have to sacrifice one wrenching day to partake in a hobby that I loved before bikes came along :-\

That's looking pretty bitcin, man! Good call on the wheel accents!

I'm still on the fence about this... I bet it would look hot if i powdercoated the spokes and chromed the rim.. or vice versa? it's hard to mockup chrome in photoshop! I have to visualize it... Crazy that my bike will go from what it is now, to the photoshop mockup in the next 2-3 months...

Very nice.

I assume you are thinking about powdering the spokes black. I think I would keep them silver. Just so there is a little pop in all of the black. Just my 2 cents, but it looks like a great plan.

Yeah I agree. I tried it and the black washed it all out. I was also considering getting an inner rear fender for the rear wheel, and chroming that. There's a whole lot of black right now, and I'm just trying to mock up bits and pieces in red/chrome to set it off a bit. Photoshop is fun :)

i powder those wheels pretty regularly... next set i do ill snap some pics for you... all black looks dope on that rim... but you can do alot wiht the stars as well

personally if it was me... your bike is all black, i would do the stars in a wet black and the outter rim in a translucent GOLD... just something diffrent and would really stand out

Gold? i dont know about throwing another color into the mix, but i see what you mean. that would look hot for sure. i'll play around with it and see what it looks like.

I'm thinking about doing them in wet black, but then it would reduce the amount of chrome/silver on the bike which i really dig. i do plan on chroming the valve head cover, the side engine cover and the swingarm, so maybe that'll be enough? i'm also trying to find out if there's a chrome inner fender for the rear wheel. that'd be hot ;D

i'll let you know when i'm ready for the powdercoat. gotta keep the work within the dotheton family!

Alright, I made a little progress this weekend. I came home from work Friday and noticed a package. I won some R6 rearsets on eBay for $100, and I plan on welding brackets onto the frame to mount them. I did some mockups and have a good idea of how/where they're going to mounted. I just need another weekend, and a shorter swingarm and engine mount bolt for when I remove the ugly OEM aluminum brackets. I plan on buying a tapper/threader and cutting the stock bolts down to fit.

I also got got moving on pounding dents into my tank. I had a spare one laying around that my cousin ran over (boo) that had no business being used for anything else, so I practiced on that. I started by tracing a rough template, and pounding the middle going outwards. Some parts dented different that others. I made sure to note this for when I dent the real tank. The weird parts were the front-middle of the tank, and near the bottom.

I plan on filling the dimples and imperfections with bondo, then sanding and priming for paint.
