1978 GS550 cafe - CHECK IT OUT!

Re: 1978 GS550

ha ha ha sounds like you are going to be slinging some bondo now :)

use Dyna Gold man... best in my opinion! then a good sandable primer and you can make the stock mounts VANISH!

Re: 1978 GS550

nice man! i used Gary at GHI signs for my decal kit... was awesome to work with and does some amazing work... you can reach him at gary@ghisigns.com
just tell him Joe from Do the Ton recomended him!

Re: 1978 GS550

things on my agenda...to try and get done by march 1st 2010

since its my first real bike (other than dirtbikes), im playing it safe and not completely dissassembling it and reassembling it like some of you guys can. this is something i hope to do on future bikes. im just gonna try and get the look i want without TOO much headache.

heres my list.

finish my seat, and primer it.

paint and clearcoat the seat and tank

obtain new mirrors and grips, put on my clubmans and see if i can do so withouth having to get all new throttle and clutch cables.

get a versa light, and wire that through my seat.

possibly remove front fender.

cut extra space off back of the frame off.

take off old tank and replace it with new one.

mount seat.

as for now im leaving the pipes alone and saving up next summer for a 4into1, so that will come later.

but this is all easier said than done, right?

Re: 1978 GS550

hey man if you go to the dollar store, get bunch of sheets of cheap foil, then wrap the whole motor and electronics, so the frame is all the is exposed. it will let you paint the frame wihtout having to pull the whole bike apart, a clean, fresh frame. completely changes a bike!

Re: 1978 GS550

you can then wrap the frame rails (see my cafe build thread) with pipe insulation and foil and shoot the motor right in the frame... works great!

Re: 1978 GS550

Nice choice with the 550. Those tanks always sell high on eBay, they seem to be the cafe choice for the gs model. Let me know if you don't want it ;D

Re: 1978 GS550

started primer-ing the seat, tank, and side covers today. some pics from it (and yes, its primered on all sides) i ordered some olive paint from montana, and im waiting for that to get here. in the meantime im gonna one or two more primer coats.

man i need to swing in there to get some ink man! one of my my snowmobile trips i will have to stop in on the way home... always like to meet new artists and get some new work done

Re: 1978 GS550

jut a small update. ive been doing alot of brainstorming on my other cl125 purchase i just made.

i got my "olive" montana paint, and i was pretty unsatisfied. it was less olive and more normal dark green. not even sweet dark british racing green. just green.

so im going with my other idea of having a black cafe but i think im gonna go the metallic flake route. i got some rustoleum dark night metallic flake made for autos tonight, which im gonna test on my sidecovers. (theyve been my tests before i do my tank/seat, if i dont like it i just sand it and reprimer it)

hopefully it'll look good.

im also getting my bar end mirrors and versa light for xmas, so im looking forward to that.

Re: 1978 GS550

i went out and did some paint last night. im pretty happy with the results, i tried to keep it to minimal runs. its black night metallic from rustoleum. im gonna go out tonight and lay a few more coats then alot of clear. i like this color better than the olive i was gonna go with. its black, but not typical black.

Re: 1978 GS550

nice. would that paint hold up to gas? I'm looking to do a matte black spray job similar to this but I'm concerned gas will ruin it.

Re: 1978 GS550

Paint looks great man!! Nice work. Nice ink too! That must of stung a bit.

Re: 1978 GS550

my coworker did my little cafe guy yesterday. it was funny, he was real nervous tattooing me, since im a tattooer as well. it would have taken me about 20 min to do that, but it took him an hour and a half. and i had to have my arm back behind me like some wrestling move for the whole time. lol

Re: 1978 GS550

Must've missed that. I only see the top of the dude's head. That style looks killer!

Re: 1978 GS550
