hi everyone. I need some help. I got a CB400N that came to me in pieces. I am trying to fix the carbs back together again. I have the Hayes manual, but there isnt enough pictures. of how the choke assembly fits back together again.

I tried guesswork but that didnt work either. Does anyone have pictures of how the choke assembly fits together? There are 3 springs and a few levels/attachments i cant figure how they all fit back on the carbs.

Help please?

Stan

Not sure if this will help or not. You might want to look at some of the fiche sites for parts diagrams.

I have a '80 CB400T, so I'm not sure if the carbs are identical but here are two old pics I have of both sides of the carbs. Not sure if this helps or not. The choke side pic is not the clearest.

Thanks woodardhsd and HerrDeacon the diagram and pictures are very helpful.

HerrDeacon, I noticed there are 2 crossover pipes in your first picture. Mine is the same as the diagram woodardhsd attached. Mine has the pipe behind. the hole appears to be plugged up on mine. Do you know what the front crossover pipe is for?

if i am still too dumb to get the choke installed, can i just not install it and then plug up the holes on the side of the carbs?

The 80-81 carbs have a accelerator pump (the weird shaped piece on one of the float bowls) I think that crossover piece might be associated with that. Either way, ignore that part. The choke assembly should be the same on all the 78-81's. But the picture I posted IS from the 78 model.

Do you have a way to post pictures of area you're having a problem with? Do you have the butterfly's off the arms? Or are you just trying to hook them together?

I guess you could leave the choke off and jb weld up the holes or something. Not sure about the other cb400t owners here, but I would be in trouble on this bike without the choke most mornings.

Dont give up yet.

It's in pieces at the moment. i have one complete unit, but the other is not assembled. I'll try to get some pictures of it at a later date. I have to put this project on hold for the moment. Year end closing and Christmas.

One complete set of (2) carbs or one complete carb?

I had a spare set to look at which helped me out greatly. The little spring that connects the two arms is a pain to get hooked up. Plus, I was thinking the whole time how stupid of a an idea it was to use a gay little spring to connect them, which pissed me off even more. :p

WHen you get back to it, PM me or update this thread and I'll try to get a picture of my spare set of carbs for you.

I had a similar issue with my CM400. For me it came down to the spring. Its job is to mimic the position i believe of the right side air intake. At the end of the cylindrical piece that isnt shairing the fuel their is a small flat piece with bent out catches or groves that the spring hooked into. If its the same issue I went through give your self some time and grab a tastey adult beverage and im sure you will figure it out.
