1979 CB750F SS ("ACE OF SPADES")(NOW WITH PICS ON PG 3)

Been Around the Block
...For the price can't be beat.

Hi all, I have just laid my hands on a 1979 CB750F Super Sport. The bike has been sitting and does need some TLC. I do have pictures of the "before" bike, but I am unsure how to re-size them as the pics are too large to download as they are. I will play with it and post when able.

On to the goodies!!!
I got the bike for $300. The motor is not leaking anything as far as I can see. Then carbs are off, stripped, and dipped. Ready to be rebuilt. A spare rack of carbs came with this bike as did the master cylinder re-build kits. The only major purchase thus far has been a used Kerker 4-into-1 that I got for $100 shipped from Boston.

IF I am lucky, all that will need to be done mechanically is that the carbs need to be re-assembled and mounted, valve adjustment (might upgrade to CB900 cams at this point) Brakes gone through, and replacement of the seat cover (included in the deal) because the original is shit, and the exhaust put on. I am hoping to get a season out of the motor before freshing it up over the winter. Considering replacing with the 900 anyway.

I am planing to shave the HONDA badges and replace with decals from Carpy. Paint for tank (in awesome shape BTW) plastic bits will either be jet high gloss black, or high gloss silver.

I will try to post pics when I can figure out how best to resize.

Sounds good dude.

To resize the pics, open them with paint, then go to "image" then click on "resize/skew" then make it what ever percentage you want. Hope to pics soon.

I'm using the new Linux Mint as my operating system and they have some other image viewer. I am playing with it. Just a steep learning curve for me...LOL...freaking retard that I am...LOL

Rat,
LOL...I know huh....I was a little dubious because of the more modern look of the '79 and later bikes. But once the creative juices started flowing...read:beer...I started thinking that the bike had promise and would actually look pretty good if I did it right.

Ian,
I am going to try to take new pics here pretty soon and manipulate them when I load them. The EX-wife got the camera somehow so I am going to have to figure that out. I am using Linux as my operating system and the media viewer is something of a pain in the ass. One of those deals where it trys to be everything to everyone, but does none of it well or easily...LOL...then again I am a bit of a wanker when it comes that sort of stuff. Maybe get my 11 yearold to help me...LOL...I am indeed off me bum though I assure you. Now....is that an "F" I see in your Avatar....another CB-darksider?

Re: 1979 CB750F SS (Wish it were a little older but.....)

Just go out and get another camera. Don't even think of asking the X for it back!! That will only lead to trouble, and her finding out about the bike, and wanting at least half of it!!! Women are evil!!!! Even the ones you think are angels eventually turn evil!!!

it certainly is. There's a few of us here when you start scratching below the surface ;)

Go! has kindly (foolishly??) undertaken the mammoth task of indexing all the builds by make/model/capacity, and while it's still a work in progress, you'll get a good idea of what's around:

When you have a bit of time (and AFTER you've uploaded your pics) you might find this interesting:

Re: 1979 CB750F SS (Wish it were a little older but.....)

I am going to try to get one of the girlfriends to bring her camera down soon and will get some "before" pics posted directly. I have the seat, tank, and plastic bits removed for referb/replace. Paint will be happening here soon and I am going with Gloss jet black. After much weeping and gnashing of teeth, I kept coming back to that as the color and it just "feels" right for this bike. I will be getting semi-oldschool Honda "wings" decals and clear coating over those.

I also need a battery for this. Has any one got suggestions on good, dependable , strong batteries for this bike? I am really trying to keep costs down, but might be willing to splurge on such an essential piece of equipment.

Still no word back from the guy with the Kerker. I am pretty sure the $$$ got there ok, but not getting any response from my e-mail to him....hmmmmmm....

Carbs will be getting reassembled this weekend or early next week. This will be my first attempt. I have the shop manual, so will be relying on that mostly to help me through the reassembly.

SIDE NOTE: I saw that ROC-City has discounts for Tonner's. I wanted to ask if anyone else offers simmilar discounts for some of the odd's and end's I will be needing. I am having (hopefully) good luck with the CB-F site as mentioned above, but just thought I would throw that out there to see if there are any resources that know about us for some of the more cafe related bits I will be needing....by the way, Thanks to "MarcW" here on DoTheTon. He was good enough to set some bits aside for me to pick up here directly.

I have a friend here in town who said they were willing to teach me to adjust the valves, so that is now covered as well. I will keep all posted and wil, REPEAT, WILL get pics posted as soon as I am able.

EDIT TO SAY:
I am trying to think of a name for this bike. Perhaps as you all get to know me, you would be willing to toss out suggestions, maybe unvail the winning selection once the bike is done? I dunno, just a fleeting thought....and I know "THIS THREAD/IDEA IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PICS" I know, I know, I know.....LOL

Keep the silver side up

Re: 1979 CB750F SS (Wish it were a little older but.....)

OK, Time for an update.
I am going to have one of the girlfriends bring a camera over to shoot new pictures....stay tuned for that adventure. I get the side covers, tank, and tail pieces removed and they are heading to get stripped, primered and painted this week., Header is FINALLY being shipped this week as well as the half moon collars and brass squish gaskets and VHT paint. Hoping to get my clip-ons and a new battery this week so that, when the carbs are bench synced and mounted, I should be ready to at least turn her over and see if she will run with little brain damage....insert good juju vibes to me here....I am gonna need to do the valve adjustment too, so I guess that will happen while the tank etc. are in paint.

Just dropping in ....will try to get off my dead ass and get those pics up here soon...

Re: 1979 CB750F SS (Wish it were a little older but.....)

How many miles? That valve adjustment is a PITA, not that i'm doing that specificley I've torn apart my top end for a rebuild... Find a FSM and just do what it says.

Re: 1979 CB750F SS (Wish it were a little older but.....)

UPDATE(still no pics...sorry...lol...working on it I SWEAR!!!!!)

Valve adjustment is currently under way. Motor turns freely and shows almost no signs of wear. It looks as though the 30K miles on the bike are well maintained miles. Carbs have been gone over and inspected by a friend who knows WAY, WAY,WAY much more about this stuff than I do and they look really, really good. They need to have jets installed. Tank, side panels and tail plastics are removed and are going to be worked on prepping for paint. All of these pieces , miraculously, are in exceptional condition. I am STILL waiting for the exhaust to show up (from someone on another board...not DTT). Wireing harness is , equally miraculously, untouched and bone stock.

I have a question, what needs to happen to use LED turn signals and tail light? Is there some sort of electrical gymnastics I need to go through in order to install these? Or are there low profile LED fixtures out there that are pretty much plug and play? Can anyone direct me to a site that has these light fixtures?

EDIT TO ADD:
Does anyone know a good place to get my hands on some vintage decals? How about removing the mounting bracket that lies under the HONDA badge on the tank? I want to fill and smooth in the recession under the badge and smooth the tank. I want to use vintage wings or the vintage badge you can see on old Honda CB350's tanks. I would prefer NOT to use Carpy's tags, and have been finding some decent decals on ebay, but wanted any info you all can provide.

Re: 1979 CB750F SS (Wish it were a little older but.....)

Set the valve lash at 5 thou. Nothing less. It is too tight. The manuals on valve clearance are wrong at 2 thou. If the led lights you are planning to install, are meant for bikes, they will already have the resisters built in. Just plug, and play! If you are planning on building your own led set-up, you need to get the proper 1 volt resisters. I've done it before, and it wasn't hard. You just have to find out what what is needed. The staff at electronics stores can usually point you in the right direction

Re: 1979 CB750F SS (Wish it were a little older but.....)

YEP!!! Got the .005 from CB1100F site. I was glad to have found out about the "correct" specs. I was planing to get a set of LEDs from fleabay. Something really low profile, but bright as hell. I was also looking for LED bulbs for the tail as well. I was thinking that if I could do it, I would replace the incandescent bulbs in the stock taillight with LED and just recess the assembly under the tail cap like I have seen so many done with theirs. I just want the tail light to be really bright as well. I'll replace it if I have to, but was just thinking out loud I guess...LOL

Re: 1979 CB750F SS (Wish it were a little older but.....)

You can actually get bulbs that convert your tail lights over to led, by just simply replacing bulbs. There is this really fuggin cool looking tail light which is coming out on the market. It looks to be about the same width, as our stock F lights, about half the height, BUT..... They are a full blown, bright as hell led, with built in yellow signals!!!!!! The tail lights are red right across the full width, and light up full width when brakes are applied. When the signal is turned on that half of the light blinks bright yellow, while the other half still functions as a normal tail/brake light! I asked for a price a couple of weeks ago, and they didn't know yet as these lights were just coming onto the market, and only the display unit was sent to them. I'll try to find out what the price is this week, as I would like to tuck one into the tail of my F
