1979 CB750K REPLACED BATTERY NOW WILL NOT START.

Good afternoon,
I had to replace my battery in my 1979 CB750k. After replacement I tried to start the bike and all I got were dim lights and a click from the starter solenoid. I did a little research and cleaned the terminals both positive and negative at the engine mount and terminals I also checked the starter button, pulled it apart, cleaned it and put back together and tried to start again. When I Turned the ignition on I got the same dim headlight and when I hit the starter button I did not hear a click and got no response from the starter. Where do I need to go from here? Thanks for the help.

Voltage on new battery is 13.5 however I just checked the voltage with the ignition on at the battery and it draws down to 4.2. I am not familiar with electrical systems and this is my first attempt at trouble shooting. Since it puts that kind of draw on the battery with the ignition on would this be a dead short? Thanks again.

Yea it started well and ran. Battery checked out as being bad so I replaced it scorpion sealed battery.

I could not tell you how old the old battery was as it had come with the bike when I purchased it about 5 years ago. My charger is a trickle charger and I have used it to bring the current battery back up to full charge after trying to trouble shoot.

Stepping back on this a bit - the bike started and ran fine, but the original battery was no good and needed to be replaced. This doesn't mesh in my mind. When did the old battery die, and what happened with the bike when it was dead? What prompted you to replace the battery?

Leave the new battery on a charger for a long time - like a couple of days. Did you have to put the acid in the battery when you bought it? It would not have been charged and would need to be fully charged to work properly on your bike. The symptoms sound like a poorly charged battery.

Jump a car battery onto it and try to start your bike. Just don't leave it connected any longer than needed.

Did you accidentally swap the battery terminals around?
No on the terminal swap. Old battery would not take a charge so I replaced with a scorpion AGM.

I neglected to say that this bike came out of winter storage and did not have a battery tender on it through the winter. When I put it up last winter it ran fine and started well. I replaced the battery when I could not get it to take a charge. When I put the new battery in with the ignition on the front light was very dim and the starter solenoid would just click. After the click all of the dash lights and front light would go out for a few minutes. I pulled the ground and cleaned it at the engine mount and terminal. I also pulled the starter button apart and cleaned it up and put back together. I have around 13.5v on the battery after setting on the charger. I have turned on the ignition and checked voltage at the battery and it drops out to around 4v. Not sure why or if this is normal. I will try the car battery jump and see if it will start. Its getting late here so I will do this in the morning. Thanks for the help.

How long did you have this new battery on the charger? You know you have to have it on charge for about 4 hours with a 3 amp charger, right?

Hillsy,
This is the link to the battery I purchased http://www.scorpionbattery.com/powersports-batteries/ytx14ahl-bs.html It had stated that no charge was necessary so I hooked it up. I am going to jump with the car battery as Tim stated and will put the battery back on the charger? Hopefully the battery is still good.

Well I jumped the car battery and did not have any luck. I am going to recheck the starter button and make sure that I have put it back together correctly and work my way through the wiring diagram and check for bad grounds. And have the battery checked to make sure that I did not get a bad one. Thanks for the help it is appreciated.

So your bike won't even start with a car battery and jumper cables?
Unfortunately not. I crossed the +/- on the starter relay and still no dice. I am thinking that my next option would be to check the starter and make sure that it is working correctly. Possibly pull it apart and clean it up.

I have finally been able to get back to the starting issue after work and other issues have kept me away. I had the new battery load tested and it failed. Sending it back for refund. Can anyone give me a good replacement battery that will be better than OEM for this bike? Or just go back to OEM? Thanks for all the help.

I use a stock replacement Yuasa wet cell battery in mine. It's in the stock location, so no worries on installation angle or whatever. They're cheap and gremlins can't kill them. Expose the cells so they oxidize and they die, otherwise they're good for quite a while- like years. I use AGM on my dirtbikes, and I haven't tried the lithium. Until the price comes down, I never will.
