1979 Suzuki GS550 Rookie Brat Build

Hey thanks for the comment. As for installing the pod filters I am not going to lie, it was an ass pain and a half. First off, I had the hardest time getting the stock air box off with all of the crap that was connected to it. And when I finally got it off I found that I was commited to having to relocate all of the stock wireing. Also the pods that I bought were a tad too long and would not fit between the carbs and the frame. With a little trim they fit like a glove with about a millimeter to spare. All in all it took me a good days worth of work from start to finish but you can't argue with the results. I think that the Zooks are totally underated bikes. With only a few mods and a couple of days worth of work and you will have yourself one little bad ass bike.

I can agree, the results are beautiful!! I am having the same exact problem with my pods, a little clearance issue. But i am determined to make them work :) Ill send you a pic of my progress with the pods!

Thanks alot for the reply!

I had to trim my pod mounts a few millimeters because they were just a tad too long and made the filters hit the frame. They just fit with a little room to spare.

It a signal and brake light combo. I got it off of eBay from some guys up in Canada. I think that it really cleans up the back end and looks great as well. I think that it was $30 so it wasn't too bad.

Oh sweet, that's the one I suggested to you earlier in this thread ;) I think I will go ahead and order it then!

So your saying when installing your pods, the toughest part was taking the electronics off the airbox? Not so much the tuning part?

Thanks everybody for the compliments.

EG - Since I didn't remove my motor I really had no other choice but to cut up my stock air box to get it out. Once you make the first cut you'er at the point of no return. I won't say that it was all that terrible but it was a lot more work than I had originally thought it was going to be. The hardest part to the whole thing was relocating the electronics. It was especially hard since I didn't want to cut up the stock harness. After it was all said and done I had to cut one wire to lengthen it for the brake switch. They rest was pretty much all bundled up and tucked under the seat and tank.

Awesome looking bike! you did real well to find one on that condition. how is the bike running carburation wise? I mean, at idle, and through the throttle, I have got K&N's with a Supertrapp and have only raised the needles so far and it runs better around half throttle now, but still struggling on low throttle and idle. Do you know what size pilot jets you are running? Cheers.
I agree with some of the guys on here, keep the original paint job! Oh and BTW, mine is kickstart only and have used a tiny scooter battery under the seat, but will prob be looking at getting a Lithium for more reliability.

you wont get better running at low down and idlr RPMs. i also wanted to go pods, but there is a science behind it i tell you. the pods cause the air to flow so erratically into the carbs that no amount of tuning will get them 100%. too many variables, even cross winds will effect their performance. none the less, the reason why this happens is that the way these carbs are designed, they need nice smooth flow of air coming in and pods certainly do not allow that. the original airbox is big and ugly, but it was designed that way. the air gets time to settle and get "sucked" in at a rate which the carbs determine and it does it through velocity stacks. so removing all of that leads to flat spots and bad low rpm power delivery. at high rpm the amount of air flowing through your carbs, the consistency and stability doesnt really effect anything....

but i will come up with a better option. im thinking of making a plenum chamber with velocity stacks built in with a filter. with enough space to allow the air to neutralize and let the cabs do their thing, caburate. ;) makes no difference what brand you use, none will give as good overall performance in town as standard. That is of course its not a race bike and kept above 7k rpm all the time....

I picked up that same integrated taillight that you picked up, and I have to say I'm impressed. Solid build, and extremely bright. I'm glad you were the guinea pig!

MR - I have to admit that I had better performance with the stock airbox but it is not soo much of a difference that I mind. I think that it looks a hell of a lot better with the pods that I was willing to loose a little bit of mid-range power. Idle is fine and you really can't tell much of a difference in the upper RPM range. I had to tune it a bit but I definitely have no complaints.

Johnny - Awesome! I love mine. Thanks for pointing them out to me in the first place.

An unfortunate short notice move is forcing me to sell my baby. Got her listed on ebay starting today and can be viewed on the following link.
