1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber---Welded Seat tubes

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

Love the way this build is going. Update with pictures, the suspense is killin me!

You're in Southampton? I'm in Warminster. Were practically neighbors 8)

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

How is the building coming along? Haven't seen an update. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger and purchase a 79 XS650 for another build project. I sold my 82 XS last year. I'm live in Epharata, PA and hope to see Tonners in the spring at the breakfast.

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

Well, I'm back at it after a long hiatus. I had some issues that kept me from working on the bike, mostly laziness and other interests.
Anyway, I painted the mags and mounted the tires. Pix tomorrow.

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

OK, boys and girls, it's time to play "Cool 8) or Stupid ???!"

It's easy to play; you just let me know whether my headlight mount is "Cool 8) or Stupid ???!".

BTW, there are no prizes, just many thanks.

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

I dig it man. Definitly different. Only negative I can think of is whether or not it will hold up to the vibrations of an XS...

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

I like it, I like it a lot! And I agree, hopefully it's stiff enough to keep the light true.

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

Maybe some rubber gromets in the bolts area to kill some of the shake but I think it's cool. Or rubber mount the bolts where it connects to the triple trees.

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

I think it could be a bit smaller, bring the light in tighter. Will make it a bit stiffer for all the vibes as well!

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

Thanks all for the comments. I'm still not sure I like the "little" headlight. We'll see.
On another note, will someone with some exhaust experience chime in and tell me whether a 2-into-1 will work.

Plain jane XS650 motor. with one of these from MikesXS. http://www.mikesxs.net/product/07-0041.html

I'll two on if I have to, but I like the 2-into-1 look! :)
Thanks

2 into 1 will works. Did it on my 75. Might want something that will merge the cylinders a little better than that 90 though..

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

montessa, yeah, the 90 is probably a little much. Thanks.
mdfergus, thanks, I like that too, but I'll be going off to the side with mine.

Did some work tonight:

Welded up a brace for my Harbor Freight engine stand, and mounted the motor.
Pulled off the starter. Had to drill out one of the long brass screws. Are they available anywhere?

Other questions:

1. Any secret to getting the oil filter "cap" from the side cover?
2. Any secret to getting the clutch screws out?

Thanks

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

LOTS of work done today. YEAH!

I wanted to welding some nuts into the rear of the seat tubes, for later decorative accent.

Also, I finally stop obsessing about my seat tubes and "just did it."

Everything is just tacked together right now. How does the geometry look to more experienced eyes?

Going out to dinner more later.

2 allen screws out and then oil filter cover has a gasket behind it, it might just be stuck in.. It's fairly substantial you could probably rock it loose with a couple of slim screwdrivers... Clutch screws you mean the 6 on the outside of the basket?? They have springs behind them and thread into the basket. Where they thread into the basket is shouldered and might break if you aren't a little delicate. I use my biggest best fitting Phillips and two hand it.. The clutch springs really load them up though, they'll be tight. Hope this helps..

Went to Harbor Freight on Sunday and picked up a cheap impact driver.
The tips are JUNK!, but it came with two short #3 Phillips tips and they lasted just long enough to get the 6 clutch screws out.

Montessa, thanks for the tips and the link to your build.

I would love to here some thoughts on foot rest placement.

Normal.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Also I may bring the seat up slightly.
