1980 CB750 Gas Tank Question

Hey fellas, I'm will soon be a proud new owner of a 1980 CB750 (pictured below).

The bike comes with a cafe racer style tank, but I'm looking to change that up. I love the look of the older SOHC CB750 style tanks. I read that the earlier '75-76 model tanks may fit. Can someone confirm this. Will a 1978 CB750K tank fit?

I know that they will probably not be perfectly compatible, but is there a relatively easy way to make it work? I have scoured the internet for hours looking for the answer with no luck.

As an aside, i'm changing that seat as well.

Thanks!

I have a 78 cb750k, here is a picture of my frame where the tank sits. you should be able to determine by looking at yours and mine if it will fit. i wil post close ups of the rubbers and the bottom of the tank.

i was looking at a 1980 frame and my guess is the bottom of the tank might hit and not sit correctly. where the "hump" is versus on the 78 where is its flat. maybe someone will come along who has tried it. hope these pics help

Thanks madcap!!

I actually got in touch with a builder who said the only way to do it is to cut and re-weld the bottom of the tank to make it wide enough.

Now I need to find someone I trust enough to do that and to see if its even worth it.

Haven't yet decided. I'm gonna wait to see how easy or hard it is to get the older 750 tank put on. If I can get it to work, i'd be more than happy to sell it. I'll can PM you buccicycle if/when that happens.

Also, it is a fiberglass, not metal tank.

awesome. just let me know..
btw if it doesnt have to be a honda tank the kz1100 tank has a wide enough tunnel to sit with a great line on that frame.. they are hard to find though..
