1980 CM400, my first attempt at a cafe bike.

Re: 1980 CM400, my first attempt at a cafe bike.

Lots of pb blaster and vice grips on the really rusty ones. Once headers were off the stud half that threads into the head wasnt bad. It was just tge exposed end that were rusty. Hopd yours are the same.

hoping so, gonna make a go at getting them this evening when I get home from work. I have PB blaster and also a torch and some MAP gas i'm gonna use to try to help loosen things.

this is getting frustrating. the bulk of my parts still haven't turned up. really not impressed with old bike barn and USPS. the new taillight did show up today.

Old bike barn takes your money then ships 3-5 months later if at all. I am surprised they are still in business.

I have a tracking number, parts should be here today. No way in hell I'm ordering from them again

I ordered my new pipes and the reducers from Dime city cycles, they shipped that same day. So far I'm very impressed with them

Like I said before, they are a little pricey, but damn if they don't do good work. I got my order with in 3 days, but then again, I'm in NC, they are in FL.

so my parts from old bike barn turned up (finally). the bars and bar end mirror are just what I wanted. the blinkers are also the exact look I wanted, however there's 2 problems with them. 1. I expected 2 wires to be coming out of the blinkers, ya know + and - like usual, instead there's one. WTF? how do I go about hooking these up? my other problem with them is that the hollow bolt that they came with are way to short to allow me to reattach the headlight bucket since the OEM front blinkers also act as the mounting bolts for the headlight bucket so I'm wondering where I might be able to find longer hollow bolts. thanks guys.

the WTF blinkers.

The ground for the light is via the mounting stud. Pretty common.

I'm functionally retarded when it comes to wiring. when I mount these what wires should be going to what?

nevermind, figured it out

despite how bad they looked the bolts actually came out fairly easily, just a little PB blaster, got the headers off and went to work with a wire wheel and got them cleaned up, primed em and gonna get em painted tomorrow, both the primer and the paint are 2000º high heat products. wanna protect the metal from corrosion since the heat wrap isn't waterproof.

as for the hollow bolts for the front turn signals. I wasn't able to find any locally but I found some online which should be here in a few days

pretty rusty

shorty mufflers showed up from DCC today. really impressed with these guys. 3 days from the time I ordered them to them showing up on my doorstep.

question for you guys, I'm gonna exhaust wrap my headers, how much wrap do you figure I'll need to do the headers. I was gonna do them with 1in wrap.

good progress made the past few days. finished getting the high heat paint done on the headers. mounted the new pipes which I think look great on the bike. finished the front fender and reinstalled it on the bike along with the side covers, it feels good to finally be putting parts back on the bike instead of taking them off. I have 2 questions for you pros.
1 the new blinkers come on fine as they should since they're also running lights, but they don't blink when I indicate left or right. any idea how I would go about remedying this?

2. went to install the new taillight. has a red, black and yellow wire, pos, neg and ground, hook it up to the proper wires on the bike after removing the old taillight and I get nothing, not even a flicker. again. any ideas?

here's a few photos of where I'm at currently.
headers reinstalled with new pipes mounted.

Re: 1980 CM400, my first attempt at a cafe bike.

Tail light is tail, stop, and common ground. So you need to hook one wire to tail one to brake/stop and ghe other to ground.

finally got it figured out.

I would get 50 feet of exhaust wrap if you are getting 1inch. 1 inch looks better than 2 imo.

decided to hold off on the heat wrap for now, I like the look of the matte black headers.

have any of you guys ever ordered a seat from motorcycle seats direct? is a 3-4 week wait common for these guys?

so here's where we're at. figured out the wiring for the taillight and rear blinkers (thank for the help guys) still haven't cut down the rear fender and mounted anything because I'm still waiting for the new seat to arrive. finished painting the tank, front fender and side covers and got them back on the bike. threw the old seat back on because I could resist taking it for a spin up a.d down my street. oh and I also ordered some rear sets.

Looking great so far man. FYI, painting the wheels makes a HUGE difference. If you are looking at doing yours, you won't be disappointed. Never cared for how comstars look stock.

I was just thinking that actually, just how ugly the stock wheels look.
