1980 KZ650

1980 KZ650 Running for the first time

1980 KZ650 Idle and rev

And here I was searching for how to embed the video where all I have to do is put a link. LOL.
You guys think thats valve lash or just loud exhaust? It still has a few holes on the left side, but besides that bit I'm happy with the way it looks and sounds. The centerstand will have to come off though.

Anyway thanks for your suggestion Beard but I think what I got will work for now (nice looking bike BTW). I kind of want to have that area empty anyway. I may try to make a tool bag that fits in there. Here's a pic of the plug:

I'm just kind of mad at myself because it was so "easy" to get it to start. Honestly it did on its first kick once the points were the right way. It is simply an amazing machine. I still have to play around with the idle and mixture screws since it dies when the choke is turned off. It might need bigger jets, I'm not sure. Two carbs didn't have the filters mounted.
I was tempted to throw on my boots and jacket and go for a ride! But it just started thunderstorming. Oh buffalo. Really I didn't though before it started to rain because the headlight isn't connected and I don't have a tail light. I think one of the turn signals is broken so I'll probably have to get at least 2 more. I should have tested them when I first got them, but hey thats what happens when you buy cheap shit on ebay, huh. I think I will get like a strip of red LEDs under the seat part for the running lights, and then the 2 inch round would be the brake light.

At least I can say the capacitor is working well. Hopefully I'll have some time to work on this thing in the next week and it will be good to go! I had yesterday and today off. Maybe I'll have time after work to work on it.

Hey man,

Glad to see it's running! That's a huge milestone achieved for you... good work.

if u have looked at the carbs.. u will understand that the "choke" is not a choke.
the only choking on this bike is you with ur chicken..

sure the lever says "choke" but when u move it you are really controlling a enriching circuit per se.. not reducing air but adding more fuel..

what? u can increase your rpms almost to redline by operating the "choke"? a blind man once said.. sure the no arm man mumbled.

understanding the above can help you understand why when the "choke" is off.. the bike dies.

Right. basically its running lean. I posted the jet sizes above and they were pretty big at 120 or something so I'm thinking maybe the petcock is clogged since it dies randomly after idling well. I did run the tank dry, so I'll probably end up cleaning the carbs again and the tank as well.

I am more worried about the sound which I think might be valve lash. I dont have the resources to build the engine right now. I'll probably ride it till it grenades then work on building an 810. Not too sure at the moment though since I think that sound could be caused by the holes in the exhaust too.

But the build is on temporary hold since I injured myself pretty badly while kickstarting it in sandals. Stupid mistake, but it cost me 2 weeks on crutches. :-X Yeah I'll wear boots next time, even if I'm just tuning it. Luckily the hospital has wifi. And to think I was going to try and ride it on memorial day, which is supposed to be sunny.

Sold the motorcycle for several reasons. Lost money but thats how it goes. I'll probably get another motorcycle sooner or later, hopefully after I move, although it might be an enduro.
It's been fun folks
