Don't worry i havent given up on this thing yet! here's what i've been up to:
Messing around with some seat designs. Decided this one was a little too crazy and complicated, I still wanted to do something other than the traditional cafe seat hump thing though.
Ended up welding a new back end, it kind of makes the bike a little more aggressive i think.
Ok so the fiberglass seat project begins. For those of you who have never done any fiberglass work before, I would encourage you not to shy away from it. It's not difficult, just a little messy, and at the end you have a one of a kind product. Here's everything you will need to get started. Definitely wear a respirator! This stuff is nasty to breathe in.
It's a very simple process. 10 drops of hardener per ounce of resin, mix it together and try to use it somewhat quickly otherwise it will harden up and you have to throw it away. I just covered my bike in saran wrap first and cut the fiberglass cloth to shape and then put some resin down first, layed the cloth on, then applied the resin until the fiberglass was clear. Wait for it to harden and repeat. I alternated using fiberglass cloth and matt layers and got a pretty strong result after 5 layers.
This is the best part. So satisfying to cut the mess to shape.
Not bad! I designed the back to hopefully hold me and my girlfriend comfortably. Should be enough room for two butts.
I went a little crazy with the bondo here. I did a ton of sanding (again definitely use a respirator) and now it looks a lot better than this. Its ready to be painted but i haven't done that yet.
I did start working on prepping the tank. I pealed off the old decals and sanded a little, as you can see there is a sizeable dent that needed some body filler.
I got a damaged R1 tank off ebay for 25 bucks and i'm going to have a welding shop install the cap onto my gas tank. Have any of you guys done this? Im worried about the air ventilation....I don't know if i can just have this thing welded on without creating some sort of air vent or not. Any advice would be much appreciated!
This is the triple tree now but I want to clean it up a bit. got some new renthal ultra low bars, they are going to look great.
This is what I'm thinking. Those two round nubs in the center of the triple tree are where the starter mounted but I decided to cut them off and mount the starter elsewhere, still not sure where yet haha. Yet another problem to solve.
Looks a lot better without those nubs i think.
Got a new tail light too!
