Ive wanted to build a cafe racer for a while now and finally decided to take the leap. I found a 1981 CB750F on craigslist for $700 with a clean and clear title so i decided to check it out. I test rode it and it ran beautifully...nice smooth throttle and smooth shifting. I ended up talking the guy down to $550 and rode it home. Gonna end up stripping it down completely and rebuilding it from the ground up...Ill keep updating this thread as i make progress

Here is when i first took a look at it

Here is the end of the first day

Finally another day off and i got to tear into the engine

These cams are in great condition but ill probably end up replacing them with 900 cams

some carbon build up but nothing too terribly bad

looks like the previous owner was running it lean

+1, I was thinking the same.

Either way, nice bike. Don't see too many of the 80's 750 bikes being cafe'd

In my opinion that is an excellent choice, not sure why the "newer" bikes aren't good candidates for Cafes. I agree with the above that tearing down a perfectly good engine may have been overkill, but then I am rarely confused with a perfectionist.
