1981 Honda CM400 Build

I don't know if the clearances are the same for the 400 and 450, but those numbers are very similar to what my manual said, so I'd say it sounds right. Double check in a manual first though. It's a really easy job, just take your time. I have a feeler gauge specifically for valves, so it has a bent angle at the end, and a feeler gauge that I use for spark plugs, so it is flat with no bend. I don't know if it is because the valve gauge is for cars, but it didn't have a small enough size to work on my 450 engine, so I had to use the straight one. Just a heads up, check that the gauge has the right size if you buy or borrow one.

For my top end rebuild, I'm not going to lie, I had a shop do it. I bought a full gasket set and just handed it to them with my engine, you can look at my thread where I talk about what the shop actually did when I got it back. Like you said, there are no instructions with the gasket kits (which makes no sense), but you can just match up old vs. new to see where the new gaskets should go. Check the valve guides too if you tear into it, those might be sloppy which could also cause the noise. I can never remember the name of the part, but the screw on the end of the rocker arm that contacts the end of the valve, the part that you adjust when you adjust the valves, check those too. They are cheap and could need replacement.

If you do tear into it, check clearances on everything. If anything is out of spec, that would be the time to replace it or fix it.

Just for shits and giggles what did the shop charge you? (Either way ill do it myself because I'm always broke) thanks for the replies too, it's nice to get some info and insight on this. I just need a reliable daily for school(40 minutes one way) , my truck is killing me and this is a way out till it gets cold.

I supplied all of the gaskets, but they had to hunt down some parts, like the intake valves that were bad and the valve guides. All said and done, it set me back around $600 for parts and labor.

Well that's out for me :) but on the bright side, yours will be in tip top shape. If you don't mind throwing a video on here when you are done or in your page so I can hear yours compared to mine once the valves are adjusted.

Drey, CM's sound like that, valve may be a little loose and your balance chain or cam chain may be a bit loose but if you read the cycle news first ride reports from the 70's and 80's they comment on the clickety clack of the motor. Get the feeler guages and do the valves, it is really easy, but make sure the motor has sat cold for at least 12-14 hours. Cam chain is simple it tightens by istelf and balance chain I would just check it and if it seems tight ish leave it. Don't set valves or cam chain so tight they go quite because if you do the tensioner will fail and the valves will burn, lose you lose a hp or 2 tight you ruin your engine. Just for refernece, my CM400 and 450 would hit the ton and sounded a lot like yours after all the valves were set and the chains tensioned to spec.

I will, but don't hold your breath. It will be a long time before I get mine running again. Free time is not something that I get a lot of.

Thanks man! This all eases my mind a lot! Thanks for the help. I haven't been past 50 yet due to me not having a license or plates so I don't want to attract too much attention, but it gets to 50 so quick. These engines are peppy.

Well whenever is fine, man. Hopefully you get some time soon!

Pulled the head, air box, carbs and back tire today. Here is a picture of the gasket. It looks to be mostly the right side. The dowel sleeves were in the center of the pins and were not forced it when I replaced them . They came out easily. Gasket set should be in tomorrow. I ordered from someone in state. Also, I'm gonna sand the head anyways and make sure it all is touching and is flat.

Here is the gasket, the one I just failed at replacing a month ago.

I have the same setup, speedo and tach on my 750. It cleans things up nicely but the light situation sucks in my opinion. I replaced the mini bulbs (that I had trouble with keeping in place) with one white LED for each guage epoxied in to the old mini bulb holder. Other people seem to have not had the same problems as me tho so don't get down on the guages

I'm excited to get it. I'm gonna flush mount my ignition through my triple tree, and the new speedo with fit perfectly behind the headlight.

Flush mounted the ignition ( brand new since I broke my original last light),mounted the choke cable through the triple as well. The bike looks 1000 times better with those big ass gauges off of it. My friend has started on the seat too so ill finally be on the road for the last month or so of riding.

2240@60 mph. Checked with the DCC guys by email and was informed it would work fine with mine.

Pretty sure every honda from 65-95 has that ratio, then they went digital on a lot of bikes.
