well ive got my 650 and it seems the battery keeps going down every few days and i have a hunch that its the rectifier. well, i followed the $20 radio shack rectifier thread and my stocker has two plugs, the plug on top has 5 wires, 1 black, 3 creamy yellow, and one white wire and then the bottom plug has 1 white wire, 1 black, and one green wire, so a total of 8 wires and im not sure how id do the r/s regulator deal. any help would be appreciated as id rather do it myself(with the help of you guys as well) and figure it out rather than buy a new one.

It's EMS system, needs power feed to field windings
$20 PMS mod wont work.
Check generator brushes and get reg/rect from XS650

You'll see the brushes if you take off the right side alternator cover. There should be 2 brushes on the inside of the cover. If they are worn to the score marks they need to be replaced. There could also be a lot of carbon build-up on the rotor rings. You could try cleaning these with contact cleaner. Cheap easy fixes.

ok, and then for my second question then, where are the rotor rings at? sorry for the noobish questions, im just new to bikes.

No problem, I just went through this on my 750. When you take the alternator cover off you will see the rotor on the bike, the stator inside the cover, and the two brushes inside the cover. The two copper rings will be on the vertical surface of the rotor.

an image is worth a 1000 words. Test the ohms across both rings. should be around 4.5 ohms, lower than that and you're not charging. Known issue and these rotors fail.
To test take your electrical meter, set it to ohms, put on lead on one ring and the other lead on the other. Also if oil or dirt got on the rotor, clean then take some fine sandpaper and a flat block and lightly sand till the copper is shiny again.
