1982 gs650g

I prefer to use kerosene (like in a parts cleaner) but ive used concoctions of Engine Bright and Simple Green.

I dont think there's much you can do to destroy the valves - just make sure there's no rubber parts in contact with the cleaner. Of course, if you are worried about damaging something from my advice, feel free to wait for somebody else to chime in!

Okay well.. Went into my garage today to get on my bike to go to work.

And i notce some rust spots on the pice of the eginie i tried to clean... The rust was on the cylinder wall and it just rubbed right off????

i wiped off as much as i could but i was already ruuning late.

I tried to used some of the degreaser i bought and i was sure to wash it all off???

Ya, you'll have that. Sorry.

Most cleaners are water based, so after cleaning steel you have to coat it with oil (wd-40, motor oil, etc)

Yeah, a lot of stations sell it. If you smell it and it reminds you of an airport, then its the right stuff.

So yes, kerosene from a station will work fine.

Cheers - boingk

Re: Re: 1982 gs650g

Update: after 6 months waiting for it to be in stoct the basket kit and trying to out the engine block together but ran into a problem

The piston won't go into the cylinder walls. I oiled it a little no luck.

Any advice?

If you put some timber slats underneath the inner pistons to stop them falling down (and to keep them square to the bore), you should be able to put the block over those 2 pistons first, then move on to the outer 2. The bores are tapered / chamfered at the base, so you should be able to compress the rings enough with your fingers to get them to enter the bore.

Although it is far easier to do this with a helper holding the block on the other side of the bike ;)

The engine is out. Not sure I specified this. I'll see if I can get a buddy to help thoigh.

Kinda off subject. I have a 1987 Harley sportster. The chain has rust on it and when I tighten it. It always gets real loose after a ride?

How long has the chain + sprockets been on there? Sounds like either it's wearing extremely fast or the adjusters are worn

OK - same difference though. Idea is to get the block supported square onto the pistons
