[/img]Ok new to the forum got my first project 82 virago 700 looking for any and all help with the build any one have any builds I can look at or any ideas over anything I need to know thanks...

That's a 750. My 920 thread is below - there are a ton of XV builds here right now!
 
From 81-83 they made a 750, 920 and 1100; that's not an 1100, and I thought I'd give you benefit of the doubt ;)
 
OK like I said I'm a virgin to the whole cafe racer thing the guy I got it from said it was a 700 but I'll take our word for it I like your virago looks good. I'll keep posting pics of the progress. The tear down need to get a battery and make sure she fires up needed a batt and a carb cleaning.

Thanks! It's a constant pain in the ass, but I dig my 920. Not sure why.

What do you have in mind for the 750?
 
It is a lot of work to make a bad ass cafe racer from a first gen Virago...but best luck. Ask questions if you need help, there are several people here who will help in between making fun of the wheels. :)

If you decide to rewire it to the eliminate the relays, there is a great writeup by totallyredvirago at viragotechforum.com under the Electrical section

You can buy a cafe sub frame from Docs Chops, but he tends to sell out of them quickly. Sets the seat anc new battery location.

Also look up virago ground mod.
 
The ground mod - if what you mean is running a ground strap to the starter motor - cracks me up. The connection at the frame is as good as it gets, just make sure it's clean.

If you mean grounding the battery to the frame rather than through the battery box, then that's definitely the Way To Go.

Hey Rich what I have been told at viragotech is that the ground to the block is insufficient because that connection is to aluminum. Now this may not be correct but from my understanding the ground mod includes that and running individual grounds from grouped sections to the frame. Like front headlight and blinkers run a ground to the frame, tail light and rear blinker run a ground to the frame, etc.
 
Aluminium is an outstanding conductor of electricity :)

It is a good idea to introduce more grounds into the system, though. The bare bones harness takes this into account.

That's the build you can now buy the complete sub-frame and seat for. The sub-frame is TIG-welded and holds a lithium battery, the seat is off-the-shelf from Dime city. The tank is Benelli Mohave, which you can now buy new, even chromed.

The big work on that bike was the laced wheels. No idea how he got those wheels to work on that shaft-drive hub.

The sub frame is $800, a tank will run you $300 off ebay, seat is $225. Battery $200. You could use the original tank and re-angle.

Yamaha did make a 700 Virago for the US market - but it was from 84-87.

Most of the Big 4 made 700cc versions of their 750cc bikes for the US market due to the US charging massive duties on imported bikes over 700cc (a ploy to save HD from bankruptcy).
 
A little more of the tear down. This wire harness sucks need to figure what all I need at a minimal. Front back lights horn speedo ignition...
