1983 Yamaha XJ 650 Maxim

Hey folks,

A friend of mine is looking at a 1983 Yamaha XJ 650 Maxim. I'm just wondering if anyone has ridden/owned one or if there's any know issues.

I own one... Kind of.

If you like my bike than a 650 maxim is a good choice for a Cafe Racer.
All you have to do is remove the rear fender, swap out the tank for a 650 SECA tank (that's what my bike is... same frame) and get a cafe seat.

650 Maxim is dead nuts reliable, and there's a huge following over on XJBikes.com. Apparently there's a milder cam in the Maxim than the Seca. And a lot of people use em as a base for shaft-drive choppers.
