Hi everyone... glad to find some like minded cafe peoples...
I have a project going at the moment on an 85 VF700S that might interest some of you. I'm blogging the project on my website www.hackaweek.com and posting videos to my YouTube channel.
It's been 30 years since I'v owned a bike! Last one was a 1976 Honda CB750F Super Sport. Before that I had a cool 75 Yamaha RD350 that I built into a retro cafe racer. Before that there were numerous other rides but it all started with a 60s's Yamaha YL1 80cc 2 stroke that I rebuilt. Bought it for $25, rode it for a year or so and sold it for $75. Ha! The good ol' days eh?
Really terrific tutorials on how to build tanks and seats from scratch. I'm a little confused though. It looks like you took and 80's "sport/street" bike and turned it into a more modern looking sport bike. Except without plastics. How are you going to hide all the ugly stuff and unattractive frame on your newer sport bike? I'm very interested to see how you're going to make this resemble a cafe racer. I've got an 85 interceptor 500 that's close to your donor so I'll be following your vids closely.
I like to know my speed due to the cops with radar around here. Not sure of the weight of the mat... auto parts store purchase and not labeled. If I had to guess I'd say 10 - 12 oz. The cloth I'm using in this video is 6 oz.
I have been following this on Youtube and am glad to see part 12 is available.
I wont enter into the "Is it a Cafe bike or a Street fighter" argument. Its definately a good showcase on making a fibreglass tank!
I have one query with the build however.
What happens when it rains and your instruments fill up with water and short out your electrics?
Awwsome! The wire saw deal is some evil genious stuff.. really cool! Ive got an 82 750 s that is in pieces waiting on me to sprinkle some love on it. These vids are like an answer to its prayers.
