2012, 70pounds and counting.......

Forgot to ad that I love flying, and any extra pound of weight is worth getting rid of as you fly further, climb faster, and cruise quicker! Its a really big deal up there.

Losing even 5lb would mean my overnight bag and radio gear rides free. Losing 15 means that plus any baggage I want to take... not sure I'd want to try 20lb taken off my frame, though :S

Ditch the machine work, stop with the arm isolation crap. Machines are for detail work, not strength gains. I'd recommend http://www.menshealth.com/powertraining/ over what you're doing now. I went from 220 lbs with a 42" waist and could not do a single pull up to 215 with a 34" waist and doing 20 clean pull ups in 9 months. I still ate well, but supplemented with protein shakes 30 minutes after workouts. The aches went away after that.

ETA I did this when I was 40 years old. I need to start again, I haven't been to the gym in a while and it shows.

boingk: 200bpm.....what are you part squirrel? That's pretty hairy, I carry between 150 and 165-ish bpm because that's right at the upper end of my personal thermogenic efficiency band (where I burn the most calories/fat) I've been maintaining that standard for a year now because that's where I needed to be for my training.

edit: Just for giggles I checked my resting and it's ~60bpm

I'm adding crossfit in February and now it looks like I may step back in the cage so I'll be adding a 10 minute sprint to the end of my cardio work everyday. I imagine puking WILL occur then haha......
I've just (30 minutes ago) committed to the Tough Mudder in June so probably in April I'll start doubling, I'll do my regular evolving workout in the AM then a combo of crossfit, MMA and yoga for an hour each evening. I will also be back to 6 days a week starting next week since this one's already blown to hell.
I may die from this but I'm gonna be a fit, ripped corpse!

Getnjgywitit: Sound like you're back on track mate, good on ya! What 60 day plan are you on? Chow hall....are you in the service or the slammer? ;)
I hope it's a kickstart to a more sustained and continuously active lifestyle for you. That's been my failing in the past, I have been in fantastic shape before but let "life shit" push it aside, 'new girl fever' has certainly killed it for me too. I won't be stopping this time, I'll just pick one that wants to be in shape too.

Wahoo650: Matt, good for you keeping Diabetes in check, that in itself is a hell of an accomplishment. Sounds like you're workout is doing you well also, that's good to hear. Congrats to your nephew as well! Stats....I'll stick mine at the bottom..

jrswanson1: Before dicking on the Hammer machines take a peek. These aren't the pussy cable/pully rigs like your local YMCA, though even the cable machines are useful. Sounds like you're an authority though, good for you! Since you're an authority you also know that each body develops and responds to stress differently so maybe curling your my little pony collection is working good for you. You're just a little guy too so it sounds like you're idea of power workouts are different than mine, different strokes.
I looked at the link and there are some interesting exercises in there but also several potentially destructive ones as well, I like my more or less functional rotator-cuffs and spinal discs thank you! Enough to make that office boy spank fest too trendy for me, plus I don't wear man-thongs either...But I'll respect your authority!

;)
Kidding aside, if that's working for you groovy.

Joe: Thanks much pal, means a lot coming from a beast like yourself! For those that don't know.....don't piss this kat off, he's....capable.

I was considerably heavy at 325, that's as much as my digital scale will indicate so that's all I'm claiming (because it's terribly embarrassing but I'll own it!) in December of last year. I just kinda sausaged up in general so no massive gut or giant ass....just big all over. Luckily I've always been a gorilla pretty muscularly dense so I also wasn't debilitated by the weight...just weighed the hell down.

At current I am a shade over 6'1" and I go 250lbs as of this morning. I have packed on a some meat while carving away fat so that's been nice. I dropped from 42-43 jeans to 36-37. I wore 32s in highschool and 34s when I was a monster in college. My chest dropped from 58" down to ~50" in June and I'm going about 54" now. My neck is 18.5" and my arms as of last monday are 18" also.

I went from 245 lbs in January of 2012 to 200 lbs in December of 2012, but t 5'8" I am still a fat fuck.

45 pounds isn't anything to scoff at chief well done, I imagine that's why you're so popular with the ladies.

I envy you fuckers that get all lumpy. ::)

When I'm out of shape, I'm 185-200 (at 6'1") and soft. When I'm in shape, I'm 180-185 and wiry and veiny. :p But I have never been able to bulk-up.

Don't knock the pussy cable and pulley machines, they let us old farts with worn out discs and joints to keep strong(ish). LOL ;)

HAHA! Point and match!
I use the cable machines for "details" so I do use'm.

Lumpy is easy, it's stacking the lumps in the right places that takes work!

Swagger, my resting heartrate is about 40bpm. For some reason I operate well at stupidly high heartrates. About the highest I can sustain for any reasonable length of time is 180 or so, but that's capped at about 60 minutes. I could probably push to 90 but wouldn't want to. 200bpm is a guess as I only use equipment based measuring and thats what they top out at. I know its high but I seem to operate well at it (for short periods) so I'm not looking too deep on this one.

Probably part of the fact that I run high is that I have very large calves from cycling, supposed to make you burn more juice when you're running or something. Cycling may also explain the high heartrate tolerance.

Cheers - boingk

Not to imply that I don't believe you, but that's pretty tough to believe.
40bpm is fairly astounding, 200-ish is kinda scary. I think if I were you I'd actually measure both, at least for firm verification.

Unless of course you're a medaled Olympic decathlete, I know two personally and even their "pulmonary bandwidth" isn't as broad as yours is stated above....shazam! Dude you must be a machine!

What's your training regimen? Stats? Pic/video of you in action? Now THAT would be inspirational!

If you're into some of that crossfit type stuff. I've some of my off season workouts from the Astros on DVD. Stuff's pretty legit.

J-rod10: Love to see them mate, thanks very much!

Boink:
My brother I have to amend my previous statements. I did a formal count and my resting after breakfast this morning (oatmeal, raisins, stevia) was 53bpm and sure enough my BPM under load (ie; cardio hell) creeps up closer to 170-175 due to increased intensity. It occurs that I just turn the old brain off for the most part and appreciate girls in yoga pants whilst grinding away....I have improved a it more than I'd thought so thanks for making me look closer mate! I still think you're part squirrel though...haha ???

As well, my Karma must be improving.....
I dropped my wallet (sealed waterproof plastic rig in pic) in the steam room after workout. I never take my money or phone into the gym but I needed to pay a yearly fee today. I got all the way home and realized it was gone and kinda panicked because that's my last spendable cash for a bit unless a couple deadbeats pay me for parts.....
Anyway, I got back and one of the trainers found it, knew it was mine and set it aside for me. All the cash was there, the cards were there....everything intact. I was gone for over an hour....

Nice mate! And no, no pictures/videos of me in action but I can do some if you're keen.

The upper limit is only verified by gym equipment with sensors for heartrate but I know 180 by count and so the 200 or more feels about right. My 40 resting is verified by a pulse oximeter my mother was trying out as she got it free from a drug rep at work - she thought I was messing with her hahaha. It was also just after breakfast.

I don't have much of a routine, but my work keeps me fairly active as I'm a hotel night manager. Generally I'm in the thick of barwork and am running around doing meet-and-greets, checking on patrons condition (ie too intoxicated or not), stocking spirits, changing/lifting kegs, collecting/washing/stocking glasses and serving people at the bar. I usually work up a fair sweat and my shifts are open ended - 5pm til close, whenever I decide that'll be!

My big love for excercise is hiking. Every year for a while now I've been hiking around Mt Koziusko, Australias highest peak at around 8,000ft. The loop goes for around 30 miles and includes a lot of elevation. Food is short as I only have the space and weight allowance for so much in my pack seeing as I take everything needed (tent, pad, bag, clothes, water, food, cooking) with me. I generally lose around 3 to 4 pounds over 3 days on that treck as its almost nonstop walking on significant grades.

Cycling is something I still do every now and then, but no fancy lycra gear. Just me in a shirt and shorts on a cycle. My favourite is a 66cm downtube model with a brazed frame, dropbars and 3-speed hub. Its from the 70's and rides very well, although its a monster even for me at 6'2". Love it, feel like a king riding the thing.

Running is on the list as well, but nowhere near frequent enough. I'm looking at buying a basic treadmill instead of renewing my gym membership which I cancelled last year due to work commitments. I have a garage where I'm staying at the moment which I could trasform into a decent man-cave, with setup for homebrewing, mechanics and working out. I usually set a pace for 11km/h, or about 6.8mph, and keep that for as long as I can without slowing under 10km/h (6.2mph). After half an hour I start slowing down in 2 minute increments to a fast walk, then wrap it up have some water and chill.

Pushups and situps are standard every now and then affairs, usually 2 sets of 50 situps and a few sets of 15 pushups. My upper body is the most lacking so I'm doing more frequent sets of pushups than anything right now. Home, work office (door is coded only 3 people know it out of 20), girlfriends place... whenever I feel the need I smash out a few reps.

Still think your routine is awesome... couldnt imagine getting into it like that!

Cheers - boingk

....you suck.....hahaha! Guys that don't need to really hit it to stay in shape make me grumpy. I have to work at it, though once I get to a point that I feel is good for me I'll go to a shorter but intense maintenance workout. I don't need to be too musclebound.

I took up hiking again this year myself. Mostly ultralight stuff but I am guilty of over packing so my pack was still close to 40lbs. For the three days, most of the weight was food and water, I carried our tent and we shared a roomy sleeping bag. Good times on the mountain. I'm going snow-shoeing next weekend, should be a lovely 20 mile loop. We'll snow camp too which I'm kinda interested in. Should be an experience.

Yeah I hear you on the not too musclebound kinda thing, I draw the line at looking like a Mortal Kombat character! Must post a photo with me in a MK pose now... Anyways I'm often just draw out and tired so don't feel like eating early and often have a very light breakfast and lunch which would help with keeping lean. I actually got asked by a coworker last night if I had a black eye... my response was that I just naturally looked this shitty hahaha.

A good hiking kit is always at least 25lb - I make most of my packs between 30 and 35lb including everything. I could reaslitically go down to about 15lb but then you start sacrificing a lot in terms of comfort. Quick rundown is as follows:

40-litre hiking pack: 1500g
Trangia cookstove: 900g
500ml Fuel: 400g
Tent: 2300g
Bag: 1200g
Pad: 900g
Food: 2000g
Water: 2000g
Clothes: 1000g
Sundry items: 500g

That setup gives me a rough base setup of 12.7kg, or 28lb, for a fully inclusive pack. That can go upwards a bit if I decide to take a few luxuries but generally its no more than 35lb. 40lb for two people is really pretty good. People go on and on about 'ultralight' stuff, but when I'm sleeping in a proper twin-skin tent on a comfy Thermarest after a well cooked meal... who's having the last laugh? I can carry 30~40lb no sweat so why rough it for the sake of a slightly lighter pack I reckon.

One thing I find a must-have is at least a few culinary luxuries. I like the pancake mix you buy from the supermarket in half-quart bottles, just adding water and shaking to mix before panfrying. Add a single-cup coffee plunger and I've got a sweet breakfast, the highest one in Australia to boot! I'm also one to take a drink or two with me, even if its just a single beer bottle to enjoy on the last night.

Anywho better do a few pushups... starting to feel guilty now!
