Ideal combustion for gasoline engines is 14.7:1 . At this point all the fuel and air is burned. Peak power is usually reached at slightly lower ratios, although not always. Two-stroke engines run better on leaner mixtures, but seize more often than with rich mixtures. My SV650 makes 64.9 HP on the dyno. It runs right around 14+:1 throughout most of the rev range. In the higher RPM's the ratio gets slightly richer (13.2:1) just before making peak power. This engine is completely stock (even exhaust) except for a 4+ degree advancer, K&N airfilter, and a small washer used to raise each carb needle. These small changes gave me a 4.9 HP increase with more linear power throughout the rev range. CV carbs can be difficult to tune when used with pod filters. Many times jet sizes have to be reduced instead of enlarged. This is why so many people have problems when they use these filters, especially airhead BMWs which use the CV Bing carbs. I am not very familiar with the carbs used on the Honda 350-360s, but I imagine they suffer the same maladies as do the CV Bings.

I guess we come from different worlds in tunning. My experience is all turbo based.

So in a perfect world "do it best" would stock all needles sizes, fuel jets and air jets. And all this would be a lot easier.

Plus I believe the aftermarket diaphragms ( lighter and way more pliable) play a significant role in allowing the slides to rise a bit easier than the original engineers designed. I think they lift quicker and sooner than they should.

on an inline twin, air cooled.

ideal is...
12.5 to 1 idle
12.5 to 1 accelerating WOT
13.5 to 1 cruising

otherwise it can get too hot.

anyways we can talk about this stuff in person. :D

Trek, what route are you taking this time? We have better road going bikes this year so no stopping every 50 miles for gas haha. We plan to stop at motorcycle superstore in Louisville on the way down. You are more than welcome to join us again if you wish.

Keith

My buddy Greg is coming w me and we plan leaving my house about 5 am on Friday. Puts us in Indy about 8-ish ??? Damned daylight whatever time. gets us to KY about nap time.

Right on. Our plan currently is leaving at 10am, stop at garage bar in Louisville for lunch and hitting mc superstore, then straight to the gorge.

Ill have to talk w Greg about all that. But sounds good to me.
I thought last year was an absolute riot. All the pit stops made the 14 hour trip seem to fly by.
I understand its all relative...I was in an air conditioned, fuel injected pickup truck. ;D

When going past Lexington some of you might want to stop at Mike Wells Racing (check website for address). Lots of nice bikes there and Mike is an interesting guy. He usually has several bikes for sale also.........

Again - everyone who has one, bring an action cam. If we can actually put a video together it'd be a hoot.

I don't think it will be as eventful this year, the two of us riding will be on fuel injected bikes, and the other two will be on a trailer. I just couldn't put myself through another 14 hours of on-ramp off-ramp driving on a little 350. Though, the ride back was pretty smooth.

I've got an 8mm Kodak that doesn't need batteries at all, just wind itup and your good to go. Could duct tape it to the side of your helmet. Maybe we should wind it up and see how long it runs.
