So I was on Motorcycle USA this morning and Yamaha has pulled their heads out of their ass and are going to import the SR400 Japan Spec to USA (I hope Canada too) and it is kick only and $5,990.00 About the same cost as the TU250 from Suzi but better power to weight, it's a single with EFI but Kick only and looks just like a 70's model. 66 MPG so a 200 mile range on the 3.2 gallon tank. I think this is the perfect commuter and first bike for anyone. Hope they sell well and I can pick up a used one in a couple years when folks want to go "Bigger" I think that it is about time they brought these over. If I had the dough I would get one for sure. Use it as my always running bike while I work on other ones. How long before a 500 CC barrel and upgrade will be available??

Cheers

With luck, Yamaha will stick to their MSRP policies and the Canadian version (if it comes here) will be about the same price.

The Suzuki TU250X is 20%+ less expensive in the US than it is here. If Yamaha brings the SR400 to Canada at $6,000 Suzuki's TU250X sales will be done for.

Comparing Yamaha MSRP's in the two countries suggest it should be about the same. The V-Star Custom (650) is $6,990 in the US and $6,999 in Canada. The V-Star 250 is $4,340 US and $4,499 CAD.

Cross your fingers. But as has been pointed out in the ongoing SR400 discussion, $6,000 buys a lot of 2nd hand bike. And Honda's got the new CB500 line at the same price or better, with better features.

Having just sold a nice, running original but upgraded BMW R90/6 for $4,000, it's hard to swallow $6,000 + freight, delivery, prep, bullshit and new taxes on an SR400.

I hear you on the price. I also like the honda 500 twins out now but the SR400 looks like a motorcyle, not a transformer LOL. It is so close to the price of the TU that I think folks will gravitate to it instead and Suzuki will have to drop the TU price. It shouldn't be as high as it is because it is a lot lower priced in other markets and exchange doesn't factor in the difference. Patenience on the new one and at a year end sale you will likely be able to snag one at 1000 discount and it then becomes 5K which is what a new 400 cc dual sport would run. Also the Japanese aftermarket has a ton of go fast parts for the 400.

I wonder if the main stream American rider will accept a kick start only bike, @400 cc's I think most entry level riders will desire electric start.

Well it looks like people are going to try and give smaller bikes a chance, first with the 500cc Harley street and now this! I think its grate, a little high in price but then again it not 1978 anymore. All I know is im going to go test ride one and see how it is when they hit the local Yamaha dealer.

I think that would be a selling point for many looking to give themselves "badass" points - sort of like why some people get a harley as their first bike (except more affordable)

17.1 kW (23.2PS) @ 6,500 rpm
SR400 $5,990.00

23.7 hp (17.7 kW) @ 9,900 rpm[1]
Honda CBR250R $4,199

CB500F Base MSRP $5,799*
Honda CB500F

A little low on power. the Honda 250 Single has more power....and $1800 Cheaper.

For $100 less, get a naked CB500 twin...Faster, Much more powerful and still cheaper....
Not a bad looking bike either:

You guys crack me up.
You can't compare a cbr or the new cb500 to the sr, they are completely different bikes with different purposes. It's like comparing a Harley to a hyabusa, sure the busa is cheaper and faster but they sure as hell don't sell like a Harley.

Would you buy a Hayabusa at Harley prices?

$6k is a lot for an underpowered retro bike.

That's a beautiful bike, I think the younger generation will jump on these quick if they do get sold over here in the U.S. I like it a lot, I would just want a little more umph from a daily.
