3rd gear gone!

Hi guys!

So my first post is abolut a problem. I've tried the search function, but couldn't find anything. Might be lack of skills!
My CB550 K3 from 1977, suddenly lost third gear! So now I have first, neutral, second, neutral, fourth and fifth.
What could have happend? Did i blow third and need new cog.
I'm pretty much a newb all the way.

I have pulled the clutch, installed new plates and springs. And made sure i did engage. Do I have to pull the engine entirely, or can it be fixed with the engine in the frame?

worked on cb360s and 750s so im no 550 genius(or 360 and cb750 genius) but i would think if the 550 is close to a 360 or 750 you will have to pull carbs valve covers cyl head and jugs. then pistons off the rods and take off the top of the case, although like i said, never worked on one and it would be a whole alot easier if you do have to pull cases apart to just go ahead and pull the whole motor

Engine has to be pulled, but after it comes out, you can leave the top end intact and just remove the bottom case with the engine turned upside down. Be sure to drain the oil first.

So my local shop, just told me that the gear cog has gone out of production!
Any takes ob that? Am I screwed? Or do any of you know where I can get it?

eBay! Sure there are 550 gears for sale there, or maybe a member here has one they could sell you.

Then again is it just the shift gremlins ? there are a bunch of springs , cogs and cams , levers and such in the shifter assembly . That just happens to be one of the more finicky ones . If the parts are bent , worn , springs tired then you may just be bypassing 3rd

Give it a good look before unloading the engine entire .

Your going to have to pull it apart to find out whats wrong.
Broken selector fork maybe?
ffjmoores 'CB550 alloy sprint' has pictures of shift forks/selector drum
