400 cafe or bust

Hey Guys,

So I have long been a fan of cars. I was way into imports and now love drifting. At least watching drifting. I am selling my future money pit of a 240sx and I am building what I think to be a cafe bike. I saw one of these when I was out visiting my brother in CA. He had just finished building his and I had no idea he was building this beast. I was instantly hooked.....

I got ahold of a 80' Yamaha XS 400 Special for free from a good friend. We have been working on it since winter and we are making progress. So far we have the seat frame built, new seat, new lights, custom brake light, and custom exhaust. Here are some pics.
 
The real question is WHAT COLOR SHOULD I PAINT IT???? The tank and seat and side covers are going to paint and i was gonna paint them all satin black but now i am thinking maybe a deep dark red. What do you guys think????

What colour... wow, you'll get lots of opinions here! ::) ;D

I like the deep, dark red idea, but I like lots of colour combinations! Whatever you do, make it YOURS! ;)

I think I saw 5 dark red bikes today on 95. They stand out and look so good. I am going with that. Pics to come!
 
:eek: wow, looks awesome even before paint!!! that seat fits that bike perfect imo. where did you get it if you dont mind me asking? i love the classic brake light and the signals are looking good too!

ps. nice EVO, is it yours? im an import fan myself, also enjoy the drift scene.
 
I like your build. Whatever you do make it your own and have fun. If you search the site you will find many color combinations and great builds....good luck.

I am waiting to get the bike back after paint. Pics will be up asap. I might do a small video of the exhaust too. Its INSANE LOUD!
 
Skip the paint and fabric'ate it.

the 15$ worth of loud fabric I spray glued over my body work is turning more heads than I ever imagined. They're walking past shiny chromed hogs to oggle my old rice.

What are you still working on?
Just the seat cover?

BTW, second look, cool air intake idea. First time I've seen it.
 
The seat I made from an old pair of jeans and plywood, nothing great but it works. I am still needing to fix my sidebar mirrors, better rear brake lightbulb because its very dim. New rear shocks just came in and I am having the front rebuilt by my friend this week.

Here are a couple more pics.

I really want to restore more of the bike and get rid of all the rust and get a 650 tank...the list is endless but its way cheaper then any car I have ever owned.
 
Nice job! I really like the pipes and what you did with the air cleaners. Some good ideas there.
