5ivemoto barn to Grand Canyon build thread

Thanks! You guys are giving us the warm and fuzzies!

I think we've decided after talking to several really nice people that the cb360 stator will fit and work with the cb160. Jarod is putting a rush order in now.

We've also got a mystery wire on the xs360 I'm gonna make a post for that asking for help here in a bit.

And I will make a post that hopefully helps anybody in Texas looking to get a title and all the mess that comes with it

Thanks again guys.

Just for filler here's my taillight mount I made outta a tail light mount. Plug welded in some stainless tubes we had lying around work so I could protect the wires from the chain.

1920 HD board track. That sounds rad I'll have to search your stuff so I can see that bad dad

Luugo the garage has an open door policy. The beer fridge is stocked there's whiskey for some reason we bought some jäger. It'll be there forever cause this isn't college anymore... All the niegbors eventually get curious enough to stop by.

There's actually one, Thomas that is there almost every night and really does allot of work considering he doesn't have a dog in the fight.

Shout out THOMAS even though I know you'll never see it

Btw, hows that little Yamaha coming? I really enjoy smaller displacement twins.. just fun little machines man

The XS is so close in every aspect...got all of my legal paperwork done and waiting for my bond to come in the mail tomorrow. I'll be registering it on Monday and it will be 100% legal.
As far as the condition of the bike, it's pretty much done, just stuck on one small issue with the wiring.

Since I've moved to the M-unit like the other 2 guys, i've run into an issue wiring up
the regulator. Rectifier wiring is fine but I'm stuck mostly on the brown wire for the regulator. The green wire from the bike goes to green on the regulator (i assume) and whats strange is
that on the original harness, the brown wire on the regulator connector disappears into the harness branching out to the turn signals, brake switch, horn, etc. I guess it's that way to keep an
eye on voltage and make sure it charges but doesn't overcharge(obviously)

My question, if anyone knows the answer to it, is where do I run the brown wire if all my circuits are individual in the M-unit...? Back to AUX with the coils? a turn signal circuit? + itself?
After i resolve this...i hope it's smooth sailing on this thing.

Stupid question, what do you mean by M-Unit. Also, the only thing I could say is go by the schematic in the manual lol... One of the moderators of this site, his name is Sonreir, is a wiring and electrical genius. He builds harnesses and everything electrical for people on here all the time.. If you are stumped still, I would shoot him a PM. Best 'O luck man.

The M unit is a controller that replaces all the fuses and relays with one compact piece that can be programmed to control pretty much everything electrical on the bike. I plan on getting one for my future build.

That's pretty much on the money. About the m unit

Also has an alarm function neat.

Ok guys I've never done any valve job before but I'm doing one now cause the cb750 after fires real bad on mid range excelleration

Real bad

A couple questions

Do I adjust the chain tension before taking my readings?

And I can get the .003 gauge under all lobes with moderate drag and the .005 under all lobes.

Cylinder 1 intake side lobe I can get the .006 into

I get allot of conflicting info on what min max tolerance should be

Anybody got any thoughts?

I should mention this is on the cb750

Chain seems tight

Also didn't find any vacuum leaks while testing the boots with starter fluid

Pic of aforementioned m unit

It's really pretty slick

I have the Clymer for that bike, you are looking for .08mm both intake and exhaust within +/- .02mm . I would lean toward slightly looser rather than slightly tight.

If you are really only measuring .005, that's pretty tight and/or you are reading the wrong number on the feeler gauge. Hundredth of a millimeter is the one to use, not thousandths of an inch.

Just some standard notes:

The engine must be cold/room temp.
Remove the plugs to make it easier and smoother to rotate.
Make sure the cams are in the correct position when measuring. Ie... 1/4 and 2/3 etc.
Never rotate the engine backwards.

Also, in the manual, the cam chain adjustment relies on the bike to be running at idle. YMMV

One thing to mention on the Motogadget M-unit, each circuit has an input and an output basically. It's split into a left and right side. Left side is where you wire in your switches and the right side is power out to each individual circuit (low beam, high beam, left signal, right signal, horn, etc...you get the idea) since the circuits don't tie to each other except for common ground...the stock wiring harness makes no sense when it comes to the brown wire from the regulator.

Canyon carver does that mean I'm way to tight?? I've got a manual I pulled off this forum but I leave it at work where I do all my reading and no actual work.

You'll need to double check, find the one that fits and the next smallest that won't fit. .004 inches is the same as .1mm so you might be close.

Here's the stock wiring diagram

Here's a simplified diagram that adds to the confusion

And yet another diagram that mostly follows the stock idea. It's for an XS650 but it shows my point.

Lastly, here's the diagram out of the Motogadget manual. It shows "regulator" coming from the stator (G) but I think it should be rectifier as this bike has a sperate regulator adding 2 more wires. Those wires aren't even shown on this diagram so who the hell knows haha.

I have no idea how big or small these images are going to be so I'll apologize early if they're enormous. I hope this is somewhat helpful in showing what my issue is.

Just an update. If you run into the above problem while wiring your m unit after market reg rec on your xs360

The mystery brown wire goes to the "lock" position on the m unit.

So there's that

New issue...with the rectifier and regulator all wired up correctly(I assume) the bike is starting on the first kick every time so that's awesome. New problem...when it starts, the bike revs to the moon. I don't have my tach hooked up so not sure what rpm it's revving to but it sounds like redline haha. Slides on the carbs aren't stuck and the throttle cable is functioning properly and the throttle is not stuck open. Any guesses?

It has to be getting air from somewhere. I would check for an air leak, also make sure you have a small bit of free play on your throttle cable when closed. Back your idle screw way out make sure there is still slack in the cable and see if it still does it.

Left me stranded. Ran outta gas. But with plenty of fuel left in the tank sounded like...

So... I used a kreem tank liner earlier on in the build. Very happy with it it was a three stage process had really good results.

But

I didn't properly block off the tangs that connect the tank sides to one another. Not my brightest moment. And it was a stone cold hassle to fix.. Picture hammering in sharpened 3/32 TIG rod...

Anywho got that squared. Gonna set the air gap on my pulse generators tonight and see how she runs

Stranded on the side of the road but very pretty still
