So I picked an yr2 up the other day, had it running and noticed I had oil comming from the case. After pulling the motor I noticed a large crack and a crap seal job. The motor is junk so what are my options? I was looking around online for motor swaps or now that I don't have a numbers matching bike it it worth trying to put a bigger motor in it. I have a 94 xj600 and it almost fits would have to mod the frame. Any advice is appreciated.
Based on the look of the YR2 assembled, I can see how this might have gone unnoticed especially if it was dirty and patched reasonably neatly (although judging by the rest of the goop on that engine I assume it looked like someone puked JB Weld on it).
I'd stick with the stock motor especially if you plan on keeping the rest of the bike stock. Let's see pics of the bike. Were you planning on a restoration or customizing it?
For the price of a set of cases on ebay ($240 OUCH!) I would probably either take them to a reputable welder and have him weld up your cases. Make sure everything is disassembled and very clean. I'm sure you could probably find someone to weld that up for $50-$100 (way cheaper than any other option). I wonder how close an RD350 engine is to dropping in? I know the R5 has basically the same cases as the air cooled RD350, but I'm not sure of any similarity on the earlier models.
So to answer some of the question... I did look over the bike prior to purchase and it was covered up pretty well. I had the bike running 3 time prior to seeing the oil drip. The hole was opened up after pulling the motor and finding other cracks.i was thinking of doing a resto-mod now maybe moding the frame and stuffing a Xs65p motor or a 550. Here are some breakdown and previous pics
I wish you were closer. I have a spare R5 motor in my garage. I would trade you for the busted one. It would be a shame to drop a 4t lump in that beast.
