Ive got a problem with my transmission popping into neutral from 1st gear when im getting on it. It actually even popped down into neutral from second as well today. What could be the culprit here?

hmm well i've noticed my 450 does that when my shifter comes loose because the exhaust pipe wont let it go all the way down into 1st gear when the shifter doesn't grip the shaft tightly. Not sure if this is your problem but its something to check out. you really gota pop my old honda into gear and if the shifter isn't tight it only goes partway into gear and pops out. could also be your clutch is a little too tight.

Popping out of gear is caused by worn dogs on the two matching gears and possibly work shift forks. The detent roller may also be worn. On those bikes it's not a very solid design, but by now the dogs will need to be replaced or repaired.

Pull the motor and split the cases and replace or repair the damaged parts.

R&D in Clearwater, Florida are the experts in gear repair, or grab a spare motor and strip the trans out. I tend to do the latter unless it's an expensive box. R&D did a superb job repairing a BMW trans for us last year for my son's K1200R.

^^^ yeah that's worst case scenario but very true it does indeed happen. I've been fortunate with my 74. Tranny is still good. only problems i have with staying in gear is like i said with the shifter coming lose. We redid my old mans GS1000G it was a pain. I hate doing transmissions.

yeah Im hoping its nothing worn, the bike only has like 6k miles on it. Anything is possible tho. Ill try adjusting the clutch first maybe something will help. The gear shifter is bent slightly too.

That could be it. If the lever doesn't allow you to pull it fully into gear, it will tend to spit out. Fortunately these trannies are reasonably available and are dead easy to swap out.

ill find a non-bent gear shift (i wanted to anyways) on ebay and readjust the clutch first. Those are the cheapest things and need to be done. You are right tho, there and a few transmissions on there for like 60 bucks which isn't too bad.
