Re: 71 cb350. round two.

Thanks for the kind words. Heading up to my buddies shop today after work to hopefully see some paint on the tank and or tail.

Re: 71 cb350. round two.

got up to my buddies shop yesterday only to find he hadnt touched the tank or tail, let alone bought the damn paint/clear. so i brought the tank down to my house to make sure the new coils/bracket would fit under the tank. well.. it didnt. so i took it all back apart and sat and stared at it till i realized i could jut flip it upside down. mounted everything back up and now the tank fits. ;D

and now the tank fits and you cant really see the coils unless you get down and look for them.

yup, that is correct. It's cool to know fellow floridians getting into old bikes, especially EG cats. Looking forward to seeing the suki take shape. Better have it done soon so you can come down the the ftl mods vs. Rockers. (it's sometime in a month or so I think, but am not sure of the date)

Re: 71 cb350. round two.

Right and wrong...

I'm from TX, just been on EG forever and seen the pup back in the old build up for the GLI.. plus i think you started some of this build on EG at one point.
Bike's in running order, it'll just be a matter of molding it into what i want.. i'll get a thread up here soon!

oh my mistake. the thread on EG is for my CB175, i never made one for the 350. lookin forward to some nice photos of your new scoot soon.

Re: 71 cb350. round two.

Andrew, the motor is looking damn good. Looks like my 750 isnt going to be done in time for Lauderdale Mods/Rockers show, which pretty much sucks. Ever find the CB900 shocks or did you give up the chase?

Its James BTW with the black R1 fighter.

Hey man! Yeah I found a set on eBay and payed a pretty penny. I am actually taking them apart tomorrow to paint and see if I can't lower them down some as they are too tall as they sit right now. (the bolt for my rearset pegs hits the swingarm.) I'll post up some photos when I'm done, and if I have any success fitting them.

Re: 71 cb350. round two.

Well I figured out why my tank and tail weasnt getting painted. Turns out my buddy was going to have a friend paint it, and this friend of his was too busy to come up and spray them. Long story short, I got frustrated (even more) and took the tank/tail to another friend right down the street and he's going to spray them this week. (his words) he's painted his Ducati real similar to what I want, so he shouldn't have a hard time laying down the paint. Hopefully I'll have it back soon, and some damn photos up on here. *fingers crossed*

Re: 71 cb350. round two.

Let me know how the quality of work goes and hell have another bike to paint...

Re: 71 cb350. round two.

Oh I can already tell you the work will be flawless. My friend Rich has been building bikes for many years, everything he touches turns out amazing. Look out for his Ducati on this seasons cafe racer on discovery HD. I believe his episode(s) should be out around Xmas time, perhaps a lite after. Can't express how excited I am to see my pieces smooth and shiny, as well as get the bike back together and on the road. Not riding in some 2 or more months has been pretty damn hard. :( hopefully that will all change soon.

Re: 71 cb350. round two.

here are some progress shots from my cb900f shock "revamp". heres what i started with.
photo1-41.jpg

i had sprayed some appliance epoxy on them a few months back just to test it out before i tried test fitting them. took them apart yesterday, bought a polishing wheel from harbor freight and got dirty.
photo2-42.jpg

ground off all the old crap, grease, dirt and paint and hit them with a coat of enamel.
photo3-27.jpg

.
photo4-5.jpg

and this is where i am now.
photo5-2.jpg

all polished and painted. i sprayed a few coats of testors clear on the polished parts in hope to prolong the shine and help retard the pitting of the raw polished parts.

now heres where i am having issues. back when i bought the shocks, i tried to test fit them with no luck. they are too tall. when i tried to fit them, the bolt head holding my rearsets onto the passenger peg mount hits the swing arm as the height difference brings the swing arm up and into the rearset bolt. does anyone have a good source for springs? the stock cb900f spring dimensions are: 9 1/4" tall, 1 3/4 top ID, 1 1/2 bottom ID. i need a spring that is about 8 3/4 tall with the same ID as the stock springs. anyone have any insight or sources?

Re: 71 cb350. round two.

Not easy to find springs. I soda blasted mine but want them rechromed. I was going to say to cut the end off the non tapered side but I looked at my springs and youd loose a lot of support where it meets the collar. Most modern springs have a larger ID. Good luck... Im still looking for spring options so I can tune the ride with different weight springs, but that might not be in the cards. Good work on the clean up though! I did the same thing about 10 months ago.

Re: 71 cb350. round two.

yes soda blasting them was on my mind as well. i think, if i cant find springs that will work, ill just heat up the bottom 1 1/2-2 coils and compress them that way. im not a heavy guy, and their going on a 350, so im not worried too much about the performance "loss" of them. anything is probably better then the redwings i have on it now.

Re: 71 cb350. round two.

got em put back togeather and on the bike! what a pain in the ass it is doing shocks with no sort of lift or table to tie the bike down to.

How did you fix this problem?

Re: 71 cb350. round two.

i ended up putting the bottom collar on the lowest setting and cutting a coil off each spring. :-\ i ground the tops of the springs as flat as i could to get them to sit flat in the upper perches. sat on the bike and gave it a few "bumps" and there seems to be plenty of travel and not too stiff or mooshy. i will be able to better tell once i get the bike back on the road.
