71' CB500 won't charge itself HELP

so I bought a new battery for it, and that wasn't the case. The guy I bought it from was arking the fuse to the solenoid to get the thing started somehow, I ran through it and turns out it was a wiring issue. So I got it running but it won't hold a charge when I take it off of the charger, I just bought a new stator, because all the wires coming from it were fried and melted together. now I'm looking into buying a new regulator/rectifier, but I was looking into buying a brand new one instead of an existing one from an old bike, anyone have any suggestions as to which one to get? and do you think this will take care of the problem by buying both a new stator and regulator? any input will help, honestly, thanks!

I bought a new one just in case, now I'm looking for a regulator, but don't know where to get a new one

Get a solid state reg/rect from Oregon electrics, saves all the messing about and is cheaper in the long run

I found this one http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-electronics-parts-honda-cb350f-cb400f-cb500-cb550-cb750-rectifier-864218.html

I wonder if that will work, or if I should get one from Oregon, they have a ton of em it's just hard to find which one will be the best for my 71 cb500

THIS. They make a quality product and I'm running their combination reg/rec on my 360.

Not sure how similar the charging system is between the 360 and 500, but I took the sheathing off around the wires coming off of my rectifier and found them to be in less than desirable condition. I purchased the same color wire and replaced them with a little room to spare incase i want to relocate the rectifier later. Mine started charging as soon as I replaced those 4 wires. I dont really notice a charge until it hit 3000 rpm so make sure you're not checking it at idle. Also take a look at this $50 mod thread, could be a quick fix to test if your rectifier is the culprit:

alright so I bought a new stator, and I'm going to order a new regulator and rectifier from Oregon, should this eliminate my charging problem? except for maybe a new battery?
