72 CB500/4 — The most molested bike of all time? Brat build.

Coast to Coast
Ok, so I am building a second brat from a severely molested 72 CB500/4.

I think it's safe to say that the crap that was done to this old girl is really friggin stupid. But we have her now and will save her.

Some highlights of REALLY stupid things done to the bike and things we found:

1. On tear down we discovered that what looked a crappy brush painted, yes, brush painted point cover and crank case cover at 1/8" of Bondo on them! Instead of just replacing the covers the previous owner put Bondo over them covering up the Honda logos.. THEN finished off the the hack job with thick ass brushed on Rustoleum paint. WTH? See pictures.

2. When we saw the spokes we thought they were rusted, but later said "holy crap, someone painted (with a brush) the spokes with a brown primer! WHY!!!???

3. Get this... So the tank that came with the bike was a immaculate (no rust inside/dents) 500T tank which had about 3" of spray foam on the underside. Again, we tried to figure this out, as the spray foam was on the frame too. Turns out the same nimrod who brush painted half the bike with Rustoleum said screw it.. this 500T does not fit so he took the front tank rubbers off and used a hammer to bang down the rods or pins that hold the front tank rubber to make the tank sit on the frame then sprayed at least 2 cans of expanding spray foam to make the tank stick to the frame. WTH!

4. Check out the unsightly place the state of Utah decided to put their assigned VIN plate! Yes, that will be moved.

5. The bike has shocks (hand painted again) that have coils the thickness of bed spring. Total crap.

6. Most nuts and bolts do not match anywhere.

I can go on and on, but you get the idea. Nevertheless, we will save her — this abused and violated bike...

Removed ugly ass muffler, removed fenders, battery compartment, and pulled engine. Yes, see the brush painted engine. Ughh...

With one $9 can of Aircraft Stripper and a wire brush, we stripped close to 1/3 of the frame in about a hour. Easy.

Looks like you're off to a great start! And wow.. Expanding foam to hold the tank on?? Some people... ???

Not even close to that title. Shock springs look normal but painted. I just stripped one that was many times worse and was even missing spacers in the rear hub and the wheel bearings had collapsed.

Fortunately, much of teh paint on mine came off with degreaser and a garden hose!

That instant foam tank mount is a new one though.

She will be a "babe" when we finish her! Thanks!

Yep, had 6" of spray foam in the channel of the tank. Got the crap out with a hooked painting putty knife. Tank is pristine. It's a beautiful 500T tank! NO RUST inside. 2 small dings outside. Stripped it down to bare metal. The shocks on the bike are definitely not stock. The coils are wayyy too thin.

Frame only. Ready to strip. Will be a bare metal frame in the end, but a gun metal color.

Don't worry. I forgot to take pictures and the tank is all nice and bare steel now! I've shared this rare story with others and I think it's worthy of "one for the books". Can't make this shit up.
