'72 CB750 front forks

Does anyone know the stock length of the front forks of a '71-'72 CB750? My winter project started as an awful partial chopper someone had attempted and came with front forks that are too long. I can't find info in the shop manual or bikebandit.com that tells me the actual length (from the axle mount on the bottom to the bolt on the top which sticks out at the top of the triple tree). Does anybody have an answer? The ones I have are 34.5". Also, how difficult is it to shorten them? It would seem like you could remove and shorten the tubes then tap the top to accept the standard bolt. Thanks.

34.5" sounds about stock length, maybe 2" over tubes?
Shortening tubes is no problem for a machine shop, I would have metric threads cut to fit stock caps (although new tubes may be cheaper,?)
Tubes are spring steel with 'piston chrome' outer
Check 'Forking by Frank' for new prices, he can make shorter tubes.
You will need lighter springs (cutting springs makes them stiffer)

Thanks for the advice PJ. I may just keep scouring CL and Ebay until I find a new set. May be cheaper than going the custom route.
