Will ANY condensor work w this single cylinder 6v system?

Most common problem is points wire grounding out.
Any 120+volt, 22~27 microfarad condensor will work, you can mount it nearer coil to get more cooling effect
You need high voltage condensor because of reverse EMF.
Should be able to see points sparking if condensor is bad although if it short circuits you won't get anything. Short is easy to test for, ohm meter from center to ground on case, give a few seconds for check though as condensor may need to charge up first.

Re: Rachels CL100, fixed

and....BOOM

man do I love it when shit happens like it should!

Ordered condenser this morning before work.

Didnt get a call. But I stopped in the Honda shop anyways. (on my way home)

They had it on the shelf. And was just getting ready to call me.

Hooked her in and...Got spark...tossed on tank and seat...and just got back from 3 mile ride!

;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks Matt!!! the coil bench test is AWESOME!!!

AND...THe tank has held gas for 24 hours...so far so good. Appears leak is fixed. 8)

Re: Rachels CL100, fixed

I took some pics to go along w Matts bench test...Ill get em posted after pizza!

How do I test if my ignition coils are good?

In order to test if your ignition coils are working, there are several multimeter tests one can perform, but often it's a lot easier to just perform a bench test.

To test a coil on the bench, you will need three wires (preferably with alligator clips) and a charged battery (in the same voltage as your coil).

First, place your ignition coil on the bench with the spark plug wire, cap, and spark plug all attached properly to the ignition coil.

Next, take one of the wires and connect the threaded portion of the spark plug to the negative terminal of the battery.

11494-070815190355-147887.png

After that, connect the negative terminal of the ignition coil to one of the wires, but leave the other end of the test wire unconnected (for the moment).

Finally, connect the positive terminal of the ignition coil to the positive terminal of the battery.

At this point, you should have almost everything you need. With a close eye on your spark plug gap, touch the wire coming off the negative terminal of the ignition coil (the one that has been left unconnected up to this point) to the negative terminal of the battery and the pull it off of the negative terminal of the battery. When the wire is disconnected, a spark should be visible from the coil.

This spark should be white or blue in color. If the spark is yellow, orange, or even red, your battery or your coil (most likely your coil) is on its way out. It may also be worth checking your spark plug wires, spark plug, or plug cap if these are replaceable items on your coil.

Test coil and condenser. plug them both back in properly and unplug points feed lead. Then take points feed wire from condenser and touch it to ground. ( For only a moment, same as before.) watch plug for spark when you remove wire from ground.

Re: Rachels 72, CL100

Except for a battery, I got everything gathered up for this winters mod. the 6v to 12v conversion.

Being the great guy he is, jsjamboree turned me onto an awesome write up of how a guy did his 125 conversion.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OL5rqaEWDlkrUnCW1IFfwykA0ZPIjJsJwPOioaw6oJ_bXDaCeLCn5hgdeE2R/view?usp=sharing

He did a bunch of work, (winding his own stator) I deem this task "unreasonable" I simply found a 350 stator on ebay.

AND besides I paid a little less for the stator than he paid for the magnet wire, epoxy & stuff, to wind his own from scratch!

vesrah kit
stator
sparckmoto R/R
resistor
battery?

I spent $1 more than he did on the resistor. After my buddies did the math I went w a single 2ohm, 1%, 25w. Seems less sketchy than the 2 1ohm, 10w radio shack resistors, series together. ::)

smallest 12v 4ah battery Ive found so far. but .5" deeper than stock. should be able to make it fit though.

In total gonna have about $112 invested in this mod.

hmmm I suppose its gonna be worth it. I hope. ;)

Re: Rachels 72, CL100

If your doing a coil test checking spark, you should have it running for around 5 minutes with at least an 8mm spark gap.
That 'stress tests' coil and also checks insulation for breakdown when 'hot' It's generally much easier to just check coil resistance at room temperature then 'cook' it for 20~30 mins in a toaster oven and re-do resistance checks.
For single wire coils, test from HT lead to ground (lamination’s in centre of coil)
For dual wire coils, test lead to lead.
With both types, test through plug cap(s) then again with caps removed (could have a faulty plug cap)

Re: Rachels 72, CL100

I did check coil resistance at 1.8 ohms...good. But didnt know if I could check the plug wire side of windings. Thats what got me to searching when I found matts test.

I also tested the plug cap. I removed and ohm'd it a 10k so figured it was fine. I have no reason not to assume it isnt stock.

I also thought about the "hot" coil issue. but figured I cross that bridge when I came to it.

Christopher Columbus took a chance...no guts no glory. ;)

Best to start w the cheaper stuff.

Christopher Columbus was looking for Japan, but he found the Bahamas. I hope you have better luck.

Yea, but he didnt fall of the edge....did he!

Re: Rachels 72, CL100

Glad she is up and running, looking forward to follow the 12 volt conversion.

trek, have you considered a 12v coil instead of the resistor?

Nope not even for a second...well, maybe a second. I doubt I can find a coil for $3 bucks...the cost of the resistor.

Re: Rachels 72, CL100

Hear that. Guess it doesn't matter if you bump up the resistance.

Re: Rachels 72, CL100

6v coil will run fine on 12v, just don't leave ignition turned on with engine stopped

Re: Rachels 72, CL100

OK guys, to catch up just a bit. I rode about 15 miles the other night. Hit 60mph once for just a bit when I tucked in, averaged 57-58mph rest of the time, sitting upright (not looking like a total bafoon). ;D

I experienced a bit of the popping. When really getting on it during WOT acceleration. Once up to speed it would clear up. Running balls out at WOT.

So I played w it a bit. I got her in the Popping ZONE and rolled off the throttle just a bit. Popping cleared up and she would also accelerate a bit.

I pm-d PJ and he said thats a lean condition.

So, I raised the needle to the max. richest... BAD IDEA.

I can get her started but I cant even get her to idle smooth at all.

Next will be lowering the needle all the way.

Re: Rachels 72, CL100

OK I didnt lower the needle ALL THE WAY.

2nd notch from top of needle...Lowering the needle and leaning her out a bit from factory center.

TOO LEAN. When I ease on the throttle she revs just fine.

When I snap the throttle from idle...She hesitates and dies.

So, trying second notch up from bottom, next.

Re: Rachels 72, CL100

OK now we got something. :) :D ;D Once again PJ proves himself to be THE super genius.

Shes running super. Just a tiny bit of popping in 3rd gear WOT way way up in the RPMs. (revving her much higher than I would on a normal ride. Higher than I ever have. I REALLY need to move that darn tach so I can see it when riding.) ::)

Rest of the range is good.

So I lowered clip one notch from factory (center) setting. Now sitting one notch above lowest notch. Raising the needle for a richer mix.

Also I have been readjusting A/F mix and idle w each change.

I am loving the location of this carb. So easy.

I could install the 107 jet...then readjust needle. Trying to get a bit more fuel in the mix up high. That way I could easily rev her high enough to blow up the engine ;)

Thanks PJ !

Re: Rachels 72, CL100

Woke up a 3am. thinking bout a nice long test ride to check needle adj before considering a jet change.

55 degrees, chilly. Waiting for the sun to warm things up a bit.

I picked up a HF wheel chock yesterday on way home from work.

Spent the morning re-fabbing it a couple inches narrower to better fit the skinnier front tire.

Re: Rachels 72, CL100

So just to refresh my memory, your new carb came with a 105 jet? Mine was shipped with a 110. At least that's what the seller said.
