Well I have finally got around to starting my build. It is going to take a while though. An hour here and there do not make for a quick build. Hopefully I will have it on the road by the end of the summer.
I have it down to the frame. Right now I am just trying to figure up the fab on my electronics tray and mounts for my seat. Then I can strip it and get it painted. I was going to do a hoop, but with these stamped frames I think I have decided just to weld up a tray on the back for support. My other issue is the seat that I bought. I love the look of it. But, as you can see from the picture I have a hell of a gap between the tank and front of the seat. Might have to sell this seat and go ahead and make my own fiberglass seat. Well now it is time to start doing some detabing and getting ready for the tray.
I did a little detabing. Ground off the two hinges for the original seat and cut out the holes for the side covers(at the red arrow). Anything else I should detab? I think I have decided to cut the rails where the yellow line is in the photo. Think it looks a little funny if I left the round holes at the back.
Well my progress has been even slower than I had thought. Maybe now that the girls softball is almost over I can work on it a little more.
Now going to look at adding to the rails. It looks kind of funny with the frame ending and the seat going on another 4 inches or so without rails under it.
Thinking about going with one of these two as far as adding to the rails.
Also having an issue with how the tank sits lower than the seat.
If I find a way to raise it up 1/2 inch it does not look to bad. Wondering if I could just bend down the rear mount. But, if I do raise it then it will be that much harder to fill in that space at the back of the tank.
I have decided to keep this seat, because I really like how it fits the bike. Does anybody have any ideas on how to take care of this space between seat and rear of tank?
I think the thing to do here is to trim the seat around the tank mount and move it forward on the frame. This takes care of your gap to the tank and the overhang off the back of the frame. There are lots of seats that have a cutout where the tank mounts.
Got the rails extended. Now it is time to get ready to paint the frame. Also going to take it to the upholster guy this week to see about getting seat made that will cover my gap.
Thinking about my lighting situation. Has anybody used the brake and turn led light strips? This is what I want to do for brake/running and turn signals.
I took the foam out of another old motorcycle seat I got cheap at a swap meet. I am going to try to use some LED light strips for the rear and brake lights too.
Well I finally got the pan trimmed up. Now I just need to decide if I am keeping the back on or if I am just going to cut it off and go with just a pad.
Well now that the girls are done with softball and family vacation is out of the way I might be able to work on the bike some more, lol. I have been working on the seat the last two days. After some research I decided to use close cell foam. Got a camping mat from Wally World.
I decided to go with two layers on the seating area and single layer on bum stop and raised area that covers gap between seat and back of tank.
I used some 80-120 grit sand paper to contour it a little.
It turned out alright. Maybe have it done professionally later. But, will do for now.
The hardest part was at the bum stop. I could not get it tight at the bottom and you can see a little bubble down there. Well now I just need to trim it up a little.
