'73 CB500: My Newest PITA

Been Around the Block
I recently acquired this bike:

The story is that the kid got it when he was fourteen, got it running, scared his parents, and parked it in his aunt's barn where it's sat for the last 16 years. With it's condition and lack of any serious wear, I believe him. The worst I could see was light surface rust and no serious rot. Once I started to mess around with it, I noticed that only the headlight and the left-front directional light up (continuous only), so it's gonna need wiring help No biggie there, I've done it before. Next, I pulled the carbs and as I flipped them over, out poured orange water. Awesome. I checked the inside of the tank and it's rusty and scaly. I pulled all the bowls and the insides were horrific. White scale in the first, rusty water in the second, varnish in the third, and the fourth was so black and gummy that the float was practically cemented in place. Now it's starting to look like a much bigger project. I then decided to spray a bit of ether into the intake and see if I could get it to fire but pushing the starter button yielded silence. Maybe a bad solenoid? Decided to kick it instead. I noticed that it kicked really easily, even more so than my old XS400. Do I have compression issues as well? Probably. Kicking it didn't even get it to cough so I put a fresh plug in a plug cap, trying each one as I went. No spark on any cylinder.

So basically, this is becoming a giant mess fairly quickly and I'm beginning to wish I got a running project. The bike does only have 8,000 miles on it and it could be nice but I don't think it's going to be on the road this year. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

Bike looks pretty good to start with!

Don't get overwhelmed with a project - you can only work on one thing at a time anyway.

Would it be worth it if it was easy? Definitely gonna take some work, but I think you'll be pleased in the end.
