73 CL125s: Billiwhacker

;D ;D ;D The Billiwhack Monster lives! Glad you guys are as stoked as I am. Yeah, it's too bad about the forks, but I don't think it will be hard to find new tubes. I'm going to post in the Buying forum and if nothing comes up there's a Thai repro set on Ebay for $50.

Cool, glad it's running.

Just like mine, and another tear down is in the future for mine too.

Needs a kick starter shaft and lever.

Just when I thought I was done finding animal remains in my bike...

Guess this little fucker decided to crawl into the engine when it was still on the table. Good thing I needed to drain the oil ::)

With that said, I fixed the clutch. It feels good! I haven't had a chance to ride it yet, but I'm very excited to do so. I need a carb insulator gasket still since my cracked one is causing an air leak and I can't get her to idle correctly. Also on the 'to buy' list:

• seat
• headlight bucket
• tail light
• fork tubes
• rear shocks
• speedometer
• throttle cable
• grips
• probably a new coil

I could go on. If anyone has anything sitting around do let me know!

I bought a new carb insulator from my dealer a few weeks ago. It came pre-cracked! I didn't notice until I went to install it over the weekend.

What did you do to unstick your clutch?

Wow, that's annoying!

To unstick the clutch I just pried the discs apart, oiled them up, and reinstalled. Some of those things were really stuck together... I guess that's what 20 or 30 years of sitting will do.

I'm happy I saw the crack before I went to the trouble of removing the carb. The parts guy is great, though, and said he'll get me a replacement. I am a little nervous about it cracking when I install it, considering the first one seemed to have cracked all on its own. Since my bike is idling smoothly after yesterday's adjustments I may hold off for a while.

It seems like a pretty robust part. I don't think you'd crack it unless you dropped it straight onto a concrete floor. But man this is one of those parts that we should be able to 3D print in 2 seconds. I can't wait until everyone owns a 3D printer and guys on the forum start uploading diagrams for every motorcycle part you could imagine. Imagine an entire catalog of printable parts just for the CB125. And we also shouldn't have to order gasket kits from Indonesia. I suppose I'm digressing here ::)

Here....Here....!!!!!!!!

It's not a screaming deal, perhaps, but this speedo is available:

Haha thanks guys. Peachman, that is indeed the speedo I need, but $100 is a bit steep for my budget :-X

Does anyone know the exact specs of the speedo cable for these (the wheel-driven speedo, not the later one that goes into the crank)? I'm wondering if I can mount a cheap moped speedometer (this, for example) if the cable specs are the same.

I installed a CB/CL175 twin speedo on my CB125 that I bought on Ebay for $25 and it's right accurate;the CB/CL200 speedo will work also.I use the 18" front wheel w/ stock size 2.75 X 18" front tire. I'm not sure if you can use a CB/CL350 speedo,but it's worth a try.

^Good to know, thanks. I'd ideally like a speedometer that doesn't go past 70 or 80mph, since I'm realistically going to max out at 55 haha

Hey max, when you have some free time, would you please check the rear rack that came with your CL for a part number? The style of the Triple-A racks I've seen on eBay match yours and trek's closely, and some have a number stamped on one of the flat vertical-support bars. (I'm shopping.)

Thanks!

Just to update, I've been having trouble starting the bike/idling, so I swapped Billi's Keihin out with the Mikuni from my CB and the bike sounds amazing. I gave the Keihin a lemon-juice bath a while back, so I'm thinking that might have clogged some of the tiny holes or something. That would explain why the choke hasn't worked. Any tips on freeing the old Keihin's sinuses?

Update #2: I was able to cruise up and down my street, and it felt amazing to finally ride, shift, and stop. I didn't push it hard but the motor felt strong. I felt some slipping with higher RPMs so I either have the clutch adjusted wrong or I need to get new clutch discs... But the bike was able to idle with the swapped carb ;D

Pretty cool. Congrats on riding and shifting! That's a milestone. What Mikuni carb is it that you swapped from the CB?

Thanks for checking out the rack. All the Triple-A's I've come across on eBay that have shots of the model/part number read five-digits. I wonder if "1006" is a serial number. Unfortunately, Triple-A Accessories, Inc. seems to have disappeared long before any of their product catalogs could have made it online. Probably even before that bird laid those eggs under your tank.

Ah yeah sorry I can't get any more specific about the rack! hold up: '02027' is the number you're looking for, same as Trek's. I took another look at the rack and I missed this the first time.

I run a VM22 on my CB. Pretty great little carb for these bikes, although I think it's slightly longer than the stock Keihin and can cause a dimple in the air filter venturi.

So the 100 and 125 models match. That was probably expected, but it's good to know for sure. Now I just have to locate one for sale... Or maybe I'll try making one if spring rolls around first.
