74 CB360- New Pictures

Re: 74 CB360

Holy Crap, $300?!
I just searched around the area and found places that don't usually do motorcycle parts.

The company that is doing the painting/blasting does a lot of work for Manitowoc Crane and Miller farm equipment. As long as you stick with their standard colors (gloss black or red) they can just work it in with the rest of their jobs. and I bring them the frame with all of the threaded holes and the neck plugged off already, so all they need to do is blast and paint.

As for powder coating I found a really small company (you can hardly see it from the street) that does some industrial jobs. Their quality isn't quite as good as one that does motorcycle stuff all the time but once the bike is assembled you can't really tell. He said they'd do a frame (blast and powder) for about $150.

Re: 74 CB360

That's what I keep hearing. I kind of challenged the guy a bit too, after he quoted. I said in a basic color the material isn't expensive and you don't have to have years of experience to get a good finish. All the work is in the prep time with powder (Joe, I'm not saying you don't need skill to powder just saying its not as intensive and finicky as paint at least not in the same way, again I'm talking about a frame in matte black, not a fancy fade or weird color) So why am I doing all the prep and still paying you $300? I do understand that even with my prep he's going to have to do some baking etc. to get all the oil residues and whatnot out but for chrissake That's just time in the oven.

I'm thinking about setting up for small powder jobs. just big enough to do something as large as a frame. I read a great thread about building your own oven etc. and with the space and guys we have in the shop now between the 5 of us we should be able to make it work.

I don't believe you. How the hell did you pull that off? The powder guy here wants me to do all the prep work and it would still cost me $300 to get the frame done!

Ya man..300 is a tad high. My guy around here said he would do it for 220 thats sandblasted with three different grits for that nice smooth appearance and he plugs the holes and all the screws etc. and powdered ANY color except for that new chrome powdercoat they just got at his shop. Paintwise....thats super cheap and an insane deal. You are a good friend to your buddy finding all this cheapness...haha. (I'm assuming your services are for beer? ;) )

Sorry I haven't posted anything for a while... We just got back from our wedding in Jamaica! Arrived back in WI to 8 deg weather and a bunch of snow :( . However, before we left my now father-in-law helped me put the motor in the frame so I can start assembly this week ;D .

Here are a couple of pics that basically sum up our week in the sun:

Re: 74 CB360

We were hoping to check out the races at Dover while in Jamaica, but the track wasn't open when we were there... looks pretty dangerous with all of the concrete walls: sv650s race in Jamaica , dover

I did get some assembly done today:

Re: 74 CB360

nice looking build, the only thing that would concern me is that you've got a bike with a notoriously troublesome engine and have painted it wrinkle black and installed new screws... I might talk to the friend you're building it for and try to nudge him into splurging on some basic engine work to ensure that the motor isn't going to grind its innards to bits, it would be a shame to have such a nice looking garage ornament

Re: 74 CB360

The bike started, ran, and sounded good before I tore into it.... but of course routine maintenance (valve clearance, plugs, cam chain tension, oil change, points, etc.) will be done before he gets it back. I'll also put a couple hundred miles on it as a shake down before I'm done. Thanks - Stout

Re: 74 CB360

I've gotten some stuff done lately, it's starting to come together...

I'll probably work on the seat next. Also, I did take the side cover off to check on the screen, oil pump, and filter as suggested; they alll look great

On a side note, I've been watching "Cycles South" on Netflix lately. If you haven't seen it, it's quite entertaining. Not really good, but entertaining.
