74 CB450 Watchamacallit

Sweet bike man. The engine paint and polish scheme is awesome. That is probably the cleanest 360 I have ever seen

G'day Clutch,

Superb looking bike mate. Really nicely done. I am a little biased as I am about to pick up my 1974 CB450 in a couple of days time & it has the exact same paint scheme. I've shipped it from the US to Sydney, Australia.

I was going to fit peashooter mufflers to it (BCR ones) but yours look fantastic. Would you mind telling me what brand tyres & muffler you are using & is the exhaust adaptor to curve the muffler upwards a DCC part?

Cheers Matt

Thanks for the kind words!
The mufflers are Emgo "Dunstall Style Open End Mufflers" from Dime City. I may be posting a video tomorrow if you want to hear them.
The adapters are from Columbia River Mandrel Bends. They are 18 degree bends in stainless. They buff to a shine similar to the exhaust and are welded to the headers. There's a pic somewhere in my thread. I almost got the DCC ones but they were on backorder so I was forced to find an alternative. In retrospect, the upsweep is a little aggressive for what I was looking for anyway.
The tires are Kenda K657 Challengers. 110/90 18 rear, 100/90 19 front.
Good luck with your build!

Thanks for your reply Clutch...and a quick one at that as well :)

I think your upsweep looks great. Are the DCC exhaust bends 18 degrees as well? I didn't see the degree mentioned under the product info.

I'd love to hear a video of your exhaust. I assume your engine is standard?

I'll only make a few cosmetic changes to my bike i.e. exhausts, wheel colour change, handlebars, mirrors & then leave good enough alone. I don't have the skill or patience for a build like yours or Spidermans lol

Cheers for the tyre info. I was going to get Firestones or Corkers but i reckon the Kendas look spot on. I have Avon road riders on my 85 GB400 but the Kendas look more era specific for the CB450.

The DCC adapters are at slightly steeper angle, and they are just that...angled. The adapters I used are curved to lessen the effect.
Engine is standard, just a piston/rings makeover. Engine only had 7K so I didn't need to go oversized.
I actually bought a set of Firestones for this originally but decided against it. Luckily I have another bike that they would be perfect on. As far as the Kenda tires go, they do the trick but are half the price of Avons or Pirellis.
Make sure you start a build thread so we can see what you're up to!

Thanks for the info Clutch. Much appreciated.

I will do a build thread...although it might be as if you are looking in a mirror with your bike lol I can only hope my can look as good as yours.

Cheers Mega

Bike has been a little finicky. Was hesitating pretty bad on partial throttle. I went from 145 jets to 150 and let the air screws out another turn. Hesitation is gone. My friend thinks it's running lean by the looks of the spark plug but I have yet to do the kill the engine and pull the plug method. Here's the plug after about 10 miles. Gonna try and post a vid in the next post...

Got the mufflers from Dime City Cycles. Emgo "Dunstall Style Open End Mufflers". I chose them because you can open them and fiddle with the packing but these are plenty loud as stock.

Been away for a while, too many things going on. I'm reviving this post as I can finally say I'm done. Was able to put a couple hundred miles on this and all the gremlins are gone. The big thing that held me up was a seat. Made a pan but had to sink the battery and electrics down to do what I wanted to do (still wanted to keep stock look). Once I got the pan in the shape I needed, it was off to the upholstery shop. Asbury Auto Tops in Asbury, NJ does some great work and they will take the time to listen. Got some foam from Canal Foam in NYC (closed cell neoprene), shaped it, then dropped it off. Very happy with the result. Thanks again to all the people that had helpful information on this board...priceless.
