XS guys,

I'm putting together an XS/TX from a couple of donor bikes and I noticed something on the TX rear Drum/Hub. Looks like a switch or sensor going into the drum. There is already a standard brake light switch so I'm wondering what this is. I haven't seen this before. I've only worked on a couple of XS'

Thanks!

Hey Dude,

That is for a Brake liner wear indicator switch.

BTW; spealing of Brakes; You might dig these:

I thought it was some sort of indicator thing. never seen that on a bike that old.

As far as I know, Yamaha was the only one.
They had just broke into the 4 stroke market and were doing some pretty cool stuff back then.

As stated, break wear indicator.
It is possible to modify it to use as a brake switch though (really touchy on set up)
I did a few around 1979

Cool idea. I have a 1984 XS up in the woods right now (at a friends place) with a drum rear mag wheel - probably has that sensor. Might come in handy some day.

I was tring to use that switch as a brake light switch but i have a led tail light so it was more trouble than it was worth

Yha, unless your going full stock restore, it really is more of a novelty item.
