'75 CB550K1 Gulf - Round...3, the fun stuff

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf racing scheme

Yeah the colors will be awesome if you get them right and it is even cooler that a few of you DTT guys are getting together and hanging out/wrenching. I am starting to see more of that on here and it is a very cool thing to see! Cheers guys!

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf racing scheme

Well it took a little bit of tracking down, but I managed to find some Gulf racing paint codes on a GT40 forum. For anyone looking to do this scheme:

PORSCHE GULF BLUE (Gulfblau)
AKZO Code POR328
Formula (Autobase)
Mixing color Amount ( Cumulative )
00 1100.0
971 1108.6
744 1135.4
575 1162.3

PORSCHE GULF ORANGE
Information
Make Porsche
Color Code
Description Gulforange
AKZO Code POR019

These are the original colors (more or less, true originals aren't available anymore). The blue I think is prefect, but the orange is very red, a little too much for me. I got a fairly close match to the orange I'm after from a stock Porsche GT3 color, code: Porsche 8C6. The black-looking pinstripe separating the orange and blue is actually a dark cobalt blue, which I still have to find.

I also found some others that people say are fairly true to the original, but I haven't looked into these yet, so I can't vouch for availability:

045 RENAULT ORANGE
051 TRIUMPH POWDER BLUE

Here are some examples of the final color combo:

Gulf Racing Blue, 328:

GT3 Orange, 8C6:

And the original orange, 019:

Opinions on the new orange?

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf racing scheme

killer.. good hunting dude..
those are really close. even the GT3 orange porche is a good match. I'd go with that one. closest match i've seen so far. maybe add a tint of red, but other wise looks good.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf racing scheme

Hey Chris--
The even better part is that you found Akzo numbers. The O-Reilly store down on Mendenhall (by the old armory) is a Akzo dealer (Lesonal). Call and talk to Ken, and he should be able to hook you up just by the codes you have. You can seriously phone in your order, and have it delivered to the O-Reilly store in 4C if you want. He is very knowlegable on paint product as well. You may want to go in and talk to him in person if you are still looking for the single stage for the frame. Either way, coming up with those exact numbers will be easy-peasy!

Good job, dude!

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf racing scheme

Well I did not know that! That's a relief for sure, makes things much easier. Just need to choose a cobalt and I'm set on paint.

So to rehash from the other day...I was a little buzzed on Saturday and some things have slipped my memory...

pint of orange, pint of blue, pint of clear? Would it be just as easy to do the frame with the paint I'm using for tank/seat to keep it all the same? Any benefits to single stage? Sorry man, I'm sure I'll ask these same questions and more as I get nearer and nearer to paint. ;D

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf racing scheme

The amounts will depend alot on how you are painting it. If you are going a base/ clear on the bodywork only, then a pint of each color should do it all. The clear only comes in quarts from most places, and then you will need the hardener to go with it. If you base clear the frame (which I wouldn't do, for maintenance reasons) then you will probably need another pint of orange.

The single stage paints are fine (like catalyzed acrylic enamel), except in the metallics which are short lived. I don't think they have the depth or repairability of a clear coated paint, since when you are buffing on them, you are taking color away as well. And, when they oxidize, it is the actual color that you are losing. The base clear paints seem to be more weather/ sun proof.

But I would use a single stage for the frame at least. It will be much more repairable in the event of scratches or rock chips that have to be touched up, and where gloss is not a big a factor.

If you are going to go all one or the other, I think I would go all enamel instead of all base clear. But I would much prefer base/ clear on the bodywork. Also, with those colors, I would check at the powder coaters. They should be able to match that color and give you a real good finish. This option would be preferable to all. Of course, then you have to wait on them though...

I am sure others have their pet ways of doing it as well. You might get in touch with Ken in Bozeman and chat with him. He is really good. The number there is 586-2378. Just ask for him and tell him what you are doing. He is the one mixing all their paint.

Hope that little dissertation helps!

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf racing scheme

Quart--self etching primer (store's brand)
quart--high build primer "
quart--primer reducer "
quart--urethane sealer "
pint--sealer hardener "

pint--base color(s) (Akzo/Lesonal)
quart--base color reducer (medium dry speed)

quart--clear (masterpro)
pint--clear hardener (use panel hardener 8183 vs 8184 for quicker drying/ less runs. 8184 can cure with less wave, but you should be buffing anyway)

This is for a clear coat system, from start to finish. Amounts should be pretty close for bodywork only. The quart amounts will be way long, but for most are the smallest amounts in which you can get them.

This is all stuff from Ken. Be sure to get the data sheets with it for mixing ratios, flash and recoating times as well.

Holy hell man! That answers more questions than I could even think to ask! I'm pretty sure that'll set me straight, thanks man.

Re: '75 CB550 - glassing tank

Got the epoxy resin and fiberglass in today. So it's game on, finally.

First main layer, and second layer on the edges.

I'll be putting down one or two more layers tomorrow around the edge of the tank for strength. And then it's on to building the tank shape onto the base and glassing it.

Oh, so I swear I read that acetone ate this florist foam away for easy clean up. Well it turns out it doesn't...it must be the blue/pink insulation foam that it works on. So that means a lot of scraping/sanding to get it all off the fiberglass. Oh well, at least I fount out before I made the tank shape!

Re: '75 CB550 - glassing the tank

Ringo,

Great start on the tank! Love the idea of using the old tank tunnel structure to start with. Also love the Gulf Racing paint theme. There was an old GT-40 in Gulf colors stored in a building near where I used to work. Every now and then they would take it out and run it up and down the street a few times. Beautiful!

Re: '75 CB550 - glassing the tank

Nice work so far. Like to see what you do for a final shape.

Cheers,

Re: '75 CB550 - glassing the tank

Nice man... I was trying my luck at the same thing but got discouraged at the end. Stay true the course!!!! And yes... that foam is a pain in the ass to clean out. I never found anything that would get it out other than elbow grease... I think you can find that at your local AutoZone for +/- $5 ;D ;D ;D

Re: '75 CB550 - glassing the tank

Before glassing over that foam, wrap it with some saran wrap like you wrap left-overs in. It peals right off the glass after it is cured and no other work needed! Minus the normal body work!

Re: '75 CB550 - glassing the tank

Thanks Brandon! I've actually just spent the last hour googling what I could use to cover the foam for when I make the top half. Smearing a bunch of mold-release wax over frail foam didn't seem like any fun at all. Glad you posted that!

Re: '75 CB550 - glassing the tank

O man West System that's a chunk of change try
US Composites http://www.uscomposites.com/
a lot cheaper and just as good unless your worrying about clarity like the finish on a old wooden Chris-Craft
I use US Composites on the race boat..

Re: '75 CB550 - glassing the tank

Thanks for that link, Duece. I'll use them if I need a refill. Actual cost didn't end up being that much more- got a package deal and free shipping.

Re: '75 CB550 - glassing the tank

Haaaahh ha ha ha ahhhhhh... I can't win lately, dammit! Turns out that the muscle I thought I pulled in my groin is actually a hernia. So I'm going to have to let them cut me open before it gets too bad. Geez, what a headache. But I am determined to get this damn bike done before summer!

On a lighter note, I'm about ready to start shaping the tank. I also got in the rear sets from Durgam_K, and a sweet brushed stainless GP muffler. I'll post some pics in a bit.
