'75 CB550K1 Gulf - Round...3, the fun stuff

Well, it's fall again. Only this time I won't be doing the work on the bike. As most know, it was sold this summer to a good buddy, but I made him promise to finish what I started. I still had a lot planned for this thing, but it was getting hard to justify dumping more money into the bike, with what I'd done already. Enter Doug, with a fresh perspective and a fat savings account from a good fire season. ;D

Engine work was always in the back of my mind, but seeing as it was in good shape and most of my cash was allotted for other stuff, it was always just 'planned'. While out for a ride with Doug this summer, I noticed the motor was burning a little oil. Perfect!! I convinced him that a high compression overbore was a much more sensible choice than a hone and re-ring...

A 592cc, 10.5:1 piston set from JE was ordered, and the cylinders taken to a machinist. And since we had the top end off, it only made sense to acquire a Webcam 58b. Some porting will come later this winter, after he gets a good feel for where the bike's at now. I can tell you that it's much more enjoyable to ride already. Especially higher in the revs.

To protect his investment, we found a pretty neat little air filter. Known as the Anti-Pod over on the sohc4 forums, it gives good filtration and doesn't sacrifice anything with it's tuned velocity stacks. It's really a cool piece of kit.

And for an aesthetic touch, he installed a clear points cover, made by a sohc4 guy.

Sorry for the phone pics, I'll grab the good camera this weekend and take some final shots of the bike before it leaves my hands for good.

Thanks Joe.

Also, for you NW residents, Doug lives in Tacoma, so around the 21-23 of this month, I'll be giving him a ride home from Montana. We're passing through Spokane, Portland and of course Seattle with the bike. If anyone wants to meet up for some beers and bs, let me know. Looks like Sunday the 21st we'll be in Spokane and maybe Portland. And Seattle on the 22nd.

I have 15 gallons of kegged craft beer here at Casa de Smashfist; Med-hopped IPA, a Halo style hearty ale and of course my favorite...30wt Stout!
I will be out of town the 10/19-21 but if you kats are in town on Monday I'll burn some burgers on the grill and we can drink beer. Plus I still mumblemumblemumble have that mumblemumblemumble side mumblemumblemumble cover here.

You had me at 15 gallons, Lee. Awesome, we'll make Portland Monday then; I wouldn't dream of passing through without stopping by! And no worries about the cover- we can do the virgin install with the master present. ;D

Good deal! That'll let me make a quick pattern for the sprocket guard...need to know what I'm working with.
PM inbound with relevant info good sir!

Awesome man. We'll be in Spokane Sunday night then, so probably in Portland right around 3 on Monday ;). Can't wait...and Doug is super stoked too.

Hey thanks John. If you head over to forums.sohc4.net and search for the "anti-pod" you get all the info you can handle. In short, it's an awesome product, made small-scale by a guy who wasn't satisfied with pods and wanted the tuning benefits of stacks. It really is a good investment, fit's tight but runs very smooth.

Ringo, I've noticed we've got a similar mounting style for the GSXR damper.

Do you find it twists under heavy steering forces and the body of the damper bumps into the frame?

If so any fixes? I suspect not as your looks a bit more angled than mine.

soooooooo...you guys are saying I have to drink heavily on a work night...sweeet :)
Yup. ;D

Neevo, I made a bracket that bolts to the frame. I had to space it out to avoid contacting the tank.

I have been reading this for the past few nights, fantastic. I am posting to express my appreciation of the build, and to bring this forward so newer members can see this incredible build.

I picked the seat up from the upholsterer's today. I asked him to model it on the Ducati Diesel's seat, with "carbon" marine-grade vinyl. He did a great job, I think.

Hi Ringo my name is Zeke and I'am doing a build with my dad. I thought your build was cool and inspirational. I was wondering what that cover on the bottom of the bike was called?
