'75 CB550K1 Gulf - Round...3, the fun stuff

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

I agree that fora traditional look the rear should curve down somewhat like Brandon's idea.

BUT - You don't have to go that way. What you have at the moment is a very distinctive shape. very different to a conventional lie down race style, but not at all bad. It's almost like a Hans Muth style for teh original Katana with that rear bulge shape.

It would work well IMHO with an angular small fairing like a katana in concept, but not to mimic that style. It would probably work best with drag or superbike bars to get your middle off that sharp edge and to change the visual lines.

The seat should probably pick up on the style elements from the tank for a more integrated look.

That tank also works well with the new sub frame shape.

Forget the collective, you are an individual.

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

I thought about your idea fo continuing the knee dents from one side to the other and I like it, so I did this one.

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

Hmm, I like that, Brandon. I'm going to have to look at it with the seat and see how it fits.

Teazer, I hear you. I plan on keeping this bike for a few years at least, so I'd like something that I don't tire of. Plus, I respect these knuckleheads' opinions. They do good work, every once in a while. ;D

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

I wasn't dissing their opinions and input - just suggesting that your design intent may be different to others.

Brandon,
I like that more complex shape. It's rounder of course but very distinctive.

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

Brandons latest would get my vote too. Looking forward to how this one turns out. Cheers.

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

teazer, didn't mean to imply that you were.

Well I've shaved off a whole ton from the back and given it some curves per Brandons drawing. I'll run out and grab a few pics here.

oooh!.....can't wait!

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

Oh it's most definitely more time consuming, more expensive, and a much bigger headache. But it will fit my bike like a glove and it's one-off. Can't beat that. ;)

It appears to me that I will need to modify the seat shape to flow more with this new shape too. Also the top of the tank comes to too much of a point still, so ignore that.

Yeah, but you will never order the pride that comes from crafting something with your own hands! Or the fact that you will be the only one with that part!

I agree...but I'll bet I'm the only one in Indy with this tank. Besides I'm not all that good with fiberglass fabrication and this one fit my needs perfectly. If you have the right stuff to make your own, there is nothing cooler, but if not this is a real nice alternative. Jim

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

Just found the thread. Great Job!. I was actually contemplating building my own tank this winter aswell. Talked myself out of it :-[ . I am modifying a 77 750f tank to have knee indents however. Anyways, Ringo you have helped me regrow a pair of balls and pull this off on the next build ;) .

Keep up the good work, this project kicks ass!

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

Haha, well I'm glad I could help Rp.

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

Looks great! I like how that leading edge turned out, following the frame up. Looks trick man.

If it was me, I think I would lose the blunt edge at the rear of the seat, and follow the contour out to either round, or somewhat pointed. I think it would allow the flow of the tank to continue right on to the end of the bike. This looks really good!!

But then, who is the 'tard with a dunstall seat on his sportbike ::) Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
