'75 CB550K1 Gulf - Round...3, the fun stuff

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

Absolutely stunning bike, I love the colours but then I would as my bike has orange highlights on it.

Can't wait to see the further updates.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

man, that 550 is awsome,
i am building a 500f and hope my paint comes out half as good as that.
this bike will stand out for sure, people will flag you down and want to talk, at every block.
great work, cant wait to see how it turns out.

later.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

WOW, I had picked this same theme for my VW buggy I started building a few years ago. Awesome work, those colors kick butt. This should push me to get busy on the buggy again. Picture it, a fiberglass buggy, with fully roll cage, and a 2 liter type 4 motor, twin turboed hanging out of it. With this same color and logo scheme. Can am style. SWEET. Killer work, cant wait to see the progress.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

Hey ringo I may just send you a better stand I cringe everytime I see a pic of the bike on the chair. If those are the office chairs I use they can nearly hold up my fat ass let alone a complete bike.... Hahaha.

Great work that thing is awesome!!!!!

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

Haha, thanks gp. It's temporary and I'm too lazy to build a stand! The bike's not much over 200lbs in it's current state though, frame and motor basically. Whatever works, ya know?

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

gpreciado, you have some bizarre timing, man. I went into the shop this morning to mock up where the rear tire would be so I could get working on the license plate mount. I was kneeling down scoping it out, then had to turn around to grab my tape measure. Well my ass hit the top rear subframe and sent it teetering forwards. I caught it about when the forks hit the floor. (I think they stopped it more than me haha). But it scared the shit out of me! So I spent today making a little dolly out of 2x4s, and now we're properly secured.

Turns out my half-assed chair wasn't very stable! :-X

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

Shame on you! that is so irresponsible!
Looking so awesome, please don't trash it now.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

Ringo, I felt it in my bones. I was in the same boat an had te tank and seat mocked up and I had it on a crate and my son came by and barely even touched it and it toppled over breaking the seat and denting the tank. All fixable and my son didn't get hurt, but I was just starting and you are way ahead of me and I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone. Plus I can't take all the credit I had the site open an went to get a bite to eat and the wife spotted the seat stand.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

Have you put some weight on those rearsets? It looks like the brackets would bend if you stood on them.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

I've stood on them several times, ffjmoore. There's some flex; about as much as the brackets bolted to the frame on my 400. The only thing I'm worried about with this setup is if the bike ends up on it's side. They'll definitely bend inwards.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf

Got the tail light installed. The flush mount light came with a prismatic lens that needed to be rounded and sanded down. They recommend clearing the lens when it's sanded how you want, so I still have to do that. But boy is this sucker (painfully) bright!

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - tail light shaped and installed

+1. Looks good Chris. I may have missed it, but what are you doing for signals?

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - tail light shaped and installed

Beautiful....I wish I had your patience and skill when it comes to paint and body work!

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - tail light shaped and installed

Ian, Red, Jay, Mike, thanks guys. Rich, no signals man! Luckily MT doesn't require them. Is it practical? No, not at all.... I hate hand signaling, too. But it just seems fitting on this build.

What the heck kind of light is that? It looks awesome! I guess it's all LED? Where did you get it?
