'75 CB550K1 Gulf - Round...3, the fun stuff

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - exhaust finished

The exhaust looks great. I cant wait to hear it. I think i would find someplace else that sells spokes.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - exhaust finished

Thanks guys. Tim, they've got their own little fleece blankets! No safe though. :(

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - exhaust finished

I have to say this bike is going to be over the top man!

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - exhaust finished

Beautiful work.
Definitly one of the bikes that really deserves the accolades.
Everyone here who actually gets down and dirty and builds something that runs should get a healthy "atta boy" at least, but this is some next level shit right here.
If there was a bike on this site that I would be proud to put out there for all to see, a bike that truly shows what the good people here are capable of this is certainly it.
Your bike, Kileys Gretta and Troys chop (once its done) are beyond exceptional exapmles of what can be done with these old girls.
Not to mention the numerous other stellar customs created here by members from around the globe.
I know that your build has pushed me to rethink my future projects. The stuff I assumed would be too difficult, or complicated seems more attainable.
Thanks man, this bike really stoked the fires in my feeble noggin.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - exhaust finished

Wow, thanks buddy, I appreciate it. Truth be told, I haven't done anything that hasn't been done before. It's just bits and pieces from builds I like and lots of good advice from DTT.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - exhaust finished

This bike is awesome. You're doing a killer job Ringo. I can easily say that this is one of my favorite builds on here and possibly my favorite bike.

I have to make a small critique though and please don't take this in a negative way because I think your work is top notch as well as your design. This is more or less just an opinion of what I think might work better.

The only thing that catches my eye in a negative way is the exhaust. It's a bit too rinky dink for the bike. I would like to think the bike deserves something a bit more proportional to it's size and definitely a dual exhaust setup. Something that screams "race." Like white ceramic coated pipes running down each side finishing to a larger stainless muffler. Don't get me wrong, the muffler on their is kick ass, it just seems small.

Anyway, like a said, just an opinion. Keep up the good work!

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - exhaust finished

i think that you are on to something with the white pipes... however. i personally would not white ceramic them... that flat would just not flow well... i would personally leave what you ahve there and make some heat shields... send them out my way and ill coat them in a super durrable wet white... i did the same on my cafe when i made the small shields... with your metal skills man you can make some larger ones that flow a bit more, i would def leave the tip of the pipe the way it is, i love it!

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - exhaust finished

maybe just make a shield over the colector or something like that, small and subtle

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - exhaust finished

Hey thanks guys. Goggles, thanks for the input, man! No worries on the critique, I can take it (and wish I would get more!)!

The bike at this point is finished. There will be hoards of work done to it this coming winter, but I need to get it out on the road now. I chose black, because apart from the paint, all the accents are either bead blasted or polished metal, or black. White would look kinda funky, no? I also stuck with a 4 into 1 because of weight. The exhaust as a whole really doesn't weigh much, and I'm trying to give off a little bit of a lightweight vibe. I will say, the exhaust looks a little weird in the pics, but I just couldn't get far enough back to show it well. It really seems to mesh right in with the whole feel of the build, and I'll get some more flattering shots as soon as I'm able. Not to mention, the angle of the silencer mirrors exactly the angle of the lower subframe tube. And keep in mind, everything is subject to change if I'm not feeling it over the summer. This baby will never be truly done.

In other news, the bike is completely wired, and all the rewiring for the switches and under seat stuff works perfectly. The run/acc positions on the ignition switch threw me for a loop for a moment. Truth be told I just about shit myself when none of my wiring worked. But my brain fart was short lived.

And the kick start lever clears my rear sets nicely, thankfully!

The only thing left to do now is wait for the spokes to arrive ::) , fill the tank and kick her over!

Ok...umm...you smell like cheese and your wearing girls jeans (The My Little Pony pocket patch gave it away).

Heh.....can't gripe much about your build man, I think you nailed it pretty well.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - exhaust finished

Alright, I got some critique for you man.......shitcan that spoke guy.............good nuf ?

Hah! Thanks man. I can live with the cheese, but the girls jeans I gotta do something about. Haha

Motrhd, yeah man. I'm just about over it at this point. If they get here before I split town, awesome. If not, well, who knows. I can probably make it back one weekend to lace and true them. We'll see.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - odds & ends

So I lied; got a couple things to button up still, but that list is just about crossed off.

First off, revheadgl made me a bad ass sig banner, so thanks mucho buddy!

Seeing as I have a basically finished but unrolling motorcycle, I figured I'd post up more pics. That's about all I can do at this point. So, it's nothing you haven't seen before, but I have some photobucket bandwidth to burn up, so why not.

Now I was really worried that I would have to do some kick start tweaking because of the rear sets, but it turns out it clears them with plenty of room. Who would've thought? I'm stoked on that.

Got the linkages dialed..

Made a polished aluminum hanger for the silencer, and did the same for the rear brake stay as well (you can kind of see it in the other pics)..

And by chance, the angle of the silencer pretty much matches than of the lower subframe tube. How nice.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - odds & ends

Aw Glenn, you know I sealed the fate of that pipe when I welded in the baffle! But you're right, it would tuck down a little more. And for rotating the muffler, I don't know if my brain has any power left to get the bends in the hanger right. Where it is now, the mounting bracket on the can is on the same plane as the rear set bracket...where it's bolted to. Which made it super easy to just bend that piece of alum. If I rotated it...more crazy bends for the hanger.

I'm like a strung-out parent who just raised half a dozen demanding kids to 18...and just doesn't give two shits any more. I want this thing on the road!

Things to consider for the redo this fall, though! Or maybe that replica Yoshi pipe on ebay I saw today, ha ha. mmmmmm

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - odds & ends

Those other guys need to bite their tounges, Ringo. I wouldn't change a damned thing.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - odds & ends

Crescent, man, I dig the different viewpoints. Keeps it fresh. But thanks!

Glen, haha, yeah a bit huh. It's growing on me, but I'll have to come up with something before long.

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - odds & ends

No worries Rev. I don't doubt your sincerity, but that thing is singularly beautiful. I couldn't imagine it any other way. You just don't arbitrarily mess with divine providence.

I'm just ribbing the doubting Thomases....? Thomasi?

Doubting Toms!

Re: '75 CB550 - Gulf - odds & ends

I just read through this build and I have to say this is an amazing build. It has shown me what a complete skill-less hack I am. I think I will switch my hobby to fishing to bury my shame. I don't think the Gulf racing team could have done better. Nice, nice nice!
