'75 CB550K1 Gulf - Round...3, the fun stuff

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

I'm always impressed with your glass work. The tank and seat area fantastic and the fender and belly pan are looking like they will be too. Great work.

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

Hi Mate, You can use a normal router to cut 6mm alloy no probs for future jobs. Have a google about what bits to use etc.

Cheers! Nice job so far.

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

Hey Matt, thanks for the tip!

John, thank you sir.

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

drives me nuts that for some reason our fire wall will not let me see the pics on this build anymore... by far one of my top fav builds on here and i can not even see the upgrades!

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

Thanks fellas.

Joe that's strange. Same thing over on DWMS?

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

Hah

Thanks Joe, yep photobucket...

Matt, the day it goes from hobby to work, is the day I'm jumping ship. ;D

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

That fender looks great, nice work with the mold. How many plys did you use?

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

The fender is three ply. I was a little worried about flex, but it's continued to cure after I pulled it from the mold and is now adequate for my uses. Pretty impressive how light the stuff is even without vacuum.

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

It is probably small enough to fit in your house oven, you could read the spec sheet on the resin you used (wasn't it Westsystems) and it should give you how high the resin will go. A 150 would probably be fine, just cure heat it up of a 2-3 hour period.

Carbon Fiber is pretty light and strong, I have a I-Beam that is 2"x10"x2" with 8 plys and it held up to 1,400 lbs.

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

Nice! I actually cure them in my water heater closet overnight. It stays about 90*F in that thing.

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

What are the pros/cons of the different types of resins? Polyester vs. epoxy and whatnot?

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

I think GoingsMoto is your man for that question, but from what I know...

Epoxy is much more fuel resistant than polyester, as well as heat resistant. Not to mention it's just about odorless.
Vinylester is even more fuel resistant (I believe)
Polyester is, well, useless in my eyes. Unless you're doing glass work on the cheap. And it's got nasty fumes.

Those are the important differences for my application. I'm sure there's many more pros/cons regarding strength etc... but I care much more about fuel resistance and easy of working.

Aircraft parts are made with epoxy.

Canoes are made with polyester.

That's all I have to say about that.

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

you also have to consider uv protection if the part is to be left unpainted, as well as how clear the resin dries. unfortunately for me that leaves poly....

Re: '75 CB550K1 Gulf - carbon

My epoxy resin is much less brown/yellow than any polyester I've used...
