76 cb750 original shocks stiff / what to get?

I was stuck for a few minutes and all I could think of was wasting an evening in an emergency room with a shock clamped on my hand.

Just another instance of a time when riding gear could have prevented an injury.

When will you all learn?

Riding gear? I'll remember to wear a helmet when I change my oil next time.

I'm starting to think it wasn't the suspension. I put on the new shocks and noticed it uncompresses even less. when I sit down on it the shocks will compress but will not lift the bike back up to original height without lifting the bike a little. Are we thinking it has more to do with my swingarm bushings or something now? What should I be looking at?

How much are you having to lift the bike? Every suspension has a certain amount of "sag". I don't know what it is on your bike, but even my Aprilia has about a 1/2 inch...

After some more investigating it seems the tightness of the locknut was keeping the swing arm from moving freely. What torque should it be? Obviously I don't want the nut to fall off.

Take a look at a parts diagram for your swing arm, and make sure you have all the stuff that's supposed to be on there...
Check that the bearings aren't fuxored too.

Thats kind of what I was wondering. Seems like tightening down the nut shouldnt effect the motion of the swingarm. Seems like you would want that nut tiiight. What bearing are you talking about? I dont see a bearing in the parts diagram.

Bushings....bushings are plain bearings as opposed to ball or roller.

The nut being tight should not affect the swing arm. The cross bolt goes through a spacer in the center of the swing arm pivot....It only compresses so much. The swing arm should move ok. New bushings may be tight, When my shocks are off, and the wheel off, my swing arm will stay in one spot. Normal drag. Greased bushings have a little drag. It should be difficult to move...the weight of wheel and tire should be able to move it all the way down, and the shock spring too.....

So should I be able to spin the bushings with my fingers? The ones in my bike don't seem to spin with my hands and I didn't want to use more force if I don't have to.

The bushings don't spin. They are fixed to the swing arm. The pivot doesn't spin either in relation to the frame.

The bushing spins on a metal spacer. The metal spacer is what the bolt tightens up against. Look at the pictures. No matter how tight you make the swingarm bolt, you should not be preventing the swingarm from moving. It may be a little stiff with new parts, but not seized.

You may have the the assembly wrong or missing some spacer part if the tightening the nut prevent the swingarm from moving.
