Just started her up today. Need to adjust the carbs and replace the old Duralast battery that came with it. More to come soon! Oh yes, she's getting a suicide shifter...

To Do List:
1] Tune Carbs for steady idle
2] Replace old Duralast battery
3] Replace tank seal
4] Strip and paint tank
5] Reupholster seat/Fiberglass a new seat
6] Relocate new battery
7] Tighten brake cables
8] Find new turn signals and brake light
9] Mount new lights/signals
10] Suicide Shifter/Jockey Shifter -- [hand clutch]
11] Cut off passenger foot pegs and mounts
12] Cut off silencer
13] New headers + dual exhaust
14] White heat-wrap pipes
15] New wheels
16] New brakes
17] New rear-sets -- mount further back

I'll add more later. Let me know if I'm forgetting anything.

Re: '77 Kawasaki "Betty" KZ400 Project

A solid start. I love the bars and the front fender. Excited to see more.

Re: '77 Kawasaki "Betty" KZ400 Project

Yes! Thanks, Danny. I've been meaning to email you today. We got her running. The carbs need to be tuned - can't hold an idle + the battery is old and needs to be replaced. Going to do some more work on her tomorrow. Will keep you updated. Please let me know when your cb350 is up and running! We should ride later this summer when we're all squared away.

Re: '77 Kawasaki "Betty" KZ400 Project

Looking good mate, I'm all about the KZ400 :)

I have a nice seat that was upholstered a few years back, $30 + shipping and it's yours if you like.

Re: '77 Kawasaki "Betty" KZ400 Project

Well my friend, Tom, who was with me yesterday, has a '75 CB750k he's building. Other than that I don't know anyone else with a vintage.

Re: '77 Kawasaki "Betty" KZ400 Project

Picking up a new wiring harness and tucking it real nice.

Re: '77 Kawasaki "Betty" KZ400 Project

I need new brackets for the headlight(they're bent), anyone know where to get those from? Also looking into new signals, preferably LED -- links?

Re: '77 Kawasaki "Betty" KZ400 Project

You should check out z1 enterprises. They have everything you need for kz's and have awesome shipping and reasonable prices. You will be surprised. I do not work for z1, but I am a KZ freak.

Re: '77 Kawasaki "Betty" KZ400 Project

Thanks a lot! Very useful source. Will be ordering plenty from Z1!

Re: '77 Kawasaki "Ugly Betty" KZ400 Project

Got a '76 wiring harness. Turns out it's not exactly the same. We are just going to "fix" the wiring harness we have now. Questions: Need a new rectifier (why are the wires riveted to the rectifier?), where do I get one for a '77 KZ400-D4? Looked on z1 - couldn't find anything.

Re: '77 Kawasaki "Ugly Betty" KZ400 Project

Thanks! Do you know if his battery eliminator would work with our kz400's? I need a battery but I'd be fine with a capacitor.

Re: '77 Kawasaki "Ugly Betty" KZ400 Project

So I learned the bike, since it was made prior to 1980, that I don't need turn signals, speedo or a tach. That makes this much easier when the objective is simplicity. I might use turn signals anyway, safer on Long Island.

Re: '77 Kawasaki "Betty" KZ400

Cut some stuff. Bolting electrical bracket and upholstering tomorrow!

I did not destroy the seat in this picture. I had an extra seat pan that is rusted and the rear end was effed up pretty good - don't know why.
