77 kz400 kick start engagement problem.

Hey guys,
I need a little help. My 77 kz400 project bike has developed some sort of issue with what seems like the kick start engagement.

The bike was running in neutral and idleing smoothly when i heard a slight "click" and the bike stopped. The kick start locked up. The bike would roll in neutral and without the bike running I could put it in gear and back to neutral again.

I drained the oil and pulled the clutch and the kick start freed up. The crank will rotate with a wrench on the timing bolt and I can feel the compression in the engine as I rotate it. I put the clutch back in adjusted the cable, set the timing and filled the oil. The kick start is still freed but there is very little resistance. Like it isn't engaging. There is no resistance if it is kicked while the clutch is pulled, like normal. So I know the clutch is doing something.

Is there something in the clutch assembly like a spring, clip, or spacer that could have caused the issue? The same goes for the kick start assembly, am I going to have to split the cases?

This is my first kick start old school bike. I have pulled the engine, split the cases and rebuilt the transmission on my modern track bike, but these old air cooled bikes are new to me.

Anyone have a similar issue before or know what it might be? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chad
