77 kz650 vintage fighter/cafe bastard child

Been Around the Block
Blew the motor out of my 77 kz650 a bit back, one too many trips past 12 G's on stock valve train (oops), so the bike's been torn apart in my garage for about 6 months now. Just starting to acquire the parts I'm going to need to put her back on the road. Would have been easy enough to slap a new motor in it, but I've always wanted more from the bike than the stock suspension would allow, so I started looking at options for doing a vintage fighter type build with the heart and soul of a cafe racer. What I came up with is running gear from an 84 gpz550, which is basically a direct bolt in on the swing arm (will need to fab monoshock mounts of course) as well as the steering stem (just need to get races for the tapered roller bearings from the gpz). I've sourced a 80 KZ750 motor (fresh and ready to go from the look/sound of things) that will bolt right into the frame. Picked up the running gear today and mocked it up quick in the garage with my tank and tail. I still have to take the grinder to the frame and get rid of all the unnecessary tabs on the frame, and figure out how to fab the monoshock mount without losing all the space for the battery/electronics. Will likely end up having to go with a smaller battery as I don't think there will be room for the stock battery box once the monoshock gets fabbed up. Also planning on running just the stock tach, will have to fab up a mount for that, with no speedo. The fender will go away on the front, and of course everything needs cleaned up before it's go time. Going to run the same headlight as before (7" round with key mounted in the bucket), as well as clean up the upholstery on the seat. Planning on filling and flattening the seat pan and using a stick on pad rather than the half assed skin job I did on it the last time. First pick is the bike as it sat when I blew the motor, other pics of the mock up as it sits now.

Cool!! I like where you're headed!! 8) 8)

KZ's are my first bike I wned since I got back on!!! I have a KZ650b that is gonna get Craigslisted 'cos the ol' lady was a bit cross over the purchase of a Duc Monster!!!! I kinda wish I could finish my KZ- I may buy someone's custom KZ, as I like these bikes as much as I like my Ducs...

Like the direction you're going!!!! I would say to bury a gel battery in the tail or go kick-only and get a very small (and cheap) glass mat battery. But do your thing to do a monoshock!!!!

Can't go kick only, the 750 motor has no kicker, so I'm stuck doing a substantial battery...not to say I can't do a gel battery and tuck it away. That'd just require some modification on my tail, that I could hopefully do without screwing up the candy paint, don't really want to shell out the $$$ for a respray on that if I can help it.

My plan is to check into the smallest possible gel battery that I can keep under the seat, in a shortened tray, that leaves room for the monoshock as well. I got some pics from a member over on kzrider.com (Mark Wing) who has the same swinger monoshocked on his 650, and it looks like he was able to keep the stock battery tray the way he did his up. I'd like to tighten things up in that area though and have a more pass through look, so if I can find a thin enough gel battery that I can side mount I'll be able to achieve everything I want on the build. And if not, I'll have to start looking at hacking into the tail to mount the battery. ;D

Gel batteries, while expensive, make your life easier, especially when it comes to power in a small package. I'd frankly like to see how a mon shock conversion can be done with the stock battery holder. I have had personal experience with these bikes, after all!!!!

indeed they are. I like what you're doing as well. It echoes my project in a lot of ways. This is what I've done with my battery and holder:

If you don't specifically need to put it under the tail, then this might be an option? It also turned out to be a good place to mount all the other incidental items. Link to project in my sig if you want to see more.
