'78 CB400TII "Lucy" (NEW PIPES!!!)

Re: '78 CB400TII

So fun gettin' em down to thier essence isn't it.

Do you plan to cap the rear where you cut it off, or add bracing or a hoop or anythin?

Re: '78 CB400TII

Definitely going to cap it off some how.
I'm going to be playing around in photoshop a lot before I start adding/removing(more) from the frame.
Depends on how good I recover my welding skills.

I plan on using this for a good porting of the paint.

Then, using this for the little things that will "pop" off the teal.

Only time will tell. Some days I'm very methodical with the build, others I just want to hear the ol' girl scream.

Re: '78 CB400TII

Carbs are pretty much done! Still waiting for local hardware store to get my float bowl screws in. Here is my current problem. The choke spring seems to be un-sprung or loose or something and bent.

Sorry for the crappy pictures.

Couple of loose ends and touch ups to make before I can cross the carbs off my list. Paint wasn't exactly what I had planned on, but when is it ever?

Re: '78 CB400TII

I need some advice on what to do with my tank.
b1a956bd.jpg

The filler hole is rusty. I was hoping I could just wire wheel it off and clean it up a bit. The inside seems to have some kind of sealer. When I feel around the top on the inside it is sperated from the tank, though not peeled. I want to salvage this tank because it is a pain in the ass to find a good tank for this model. I've heard of someone using a tank off an 82 cm450.

Re: '78 CB400TII

My tank was pretty frigged up too. what I did was take the petcock out, put in 50 nuts and bolts( you can use any amount, just count them so you get them all out) and just rolled them around for about 3 days. Once that was done I got a can of Red Coat tank sealer, followed the directions and now the inside is pretty mint.

Re: '78 CB400TII

Ya, I was thinking about dumping a bunch of BBs in there and filling it with gas, perhaps diesel. Then shaking it all about until I feel like it was good and clean.

Did you put the nuts in there dry?

You had me wondering and picturing you walking around for "3days" shaking you gas tank. Then it got me thinking.... what if you mounted to a "spicket" and used a rotisserie like on a bar-b-q and let it tumble for days, like a rock polisher.

I like that idea! I'm going to start drawing something up.

Re: '78 CB400TII

I have also heard that a few feet of chain inside works well, I would probably use a combination of Nuts, Screws and Chain. Would probably also change the rotation each day to get a thorough side to side abrasion.

Re: '78 CB400TII

It had a small bit of fuel in it but either gas or diesel would work for you. I like the rotisserie idea!

Re: '78 CB400TII

Just don't shake it! You will end up with all these little dents that will need fixin'!

Re: '78 CB400TII (Rotisserie tank cleaner thingy)

AWESOME!..You gotta report back on how it does. Will you alternate rotation? I thing it would definately help to even the abrasion through out the Tank

Re: '78 CB400TII (Rotisserie tank cleaner thingy)

Definitely change rotation. The little grill rotisserie thingy will change directions. It's starting to leak out the cap, no big deal. Also, when I went to check on it a little bit ago, the shaft had worked its way out of the motor  I will be fixing that tomorrow. I threw in ten bolts and a bunch of BBs. I'll drain it tomorrow afternoon and post a pic of what came out.

Re: '78 CB400TII (Rotisserie tank cleaner thingy)

Try putting something underneath the front to lift it up for a while. Then after a couple of hours switch it to the back. This way you get all the corners.

Another good suggestion!

Re: '78 CB400TII (Rotisserie tank cleaner thingy)

Haha let's hope in FRIGGIN works.

But, alright I have a n00b question. What weight, capacity, and brand of oil are y'all guys using on these 400s?

Re: '78 CB400TII (Rotisserie tank cleaner thingy)

I run the pennzoil 20/50 bike oil in mine with a wix filter. Works well.

Re: '78 CB400TII (Rotisserie tank cleaner thingy)

I run Quaker state 10 W40 regular oil per the vintage Honda shop I get my OEM parts from, bike seems to like it and I run Honda filters cause they are the same price as after market from them. I have run the rotella oil as well with fine results, secret is change it when it starts to show signs of breaking down and you will be fine. Air cooled bikes need the oil changed more often when ridden in heat or at high rpms.
